Topic:Urine Analysis

Urine analysis in horses involves the examination of urine to assess the health and physiological status of the animal. This diagnostic tool provides insights into the renal function, hydration status, and potential presence of systemic diseases. Key parameters evaluated in equine urine analysis include pH, specific gravity, protein levels, glucose, ketones, and the presence of blood or sediment. Variations in these parameters can indicate metabolic disorders, infections, or other health issues. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the methodologies, findings, and clinical implications of urine analysis in equine veterinary practice.

Quantification of HBOC-200 in equine plasma and urine was performed using a method recently developed by our laboratory. The elimination from plasma was based on size distribution of the bovine Hb polymer. The decline of plasma concentration-time curve of HBOC-200 was described by a noninterchanging 2-compartmental m...
Urinary and serum concentrations of diclofenac after topical application to horses.
Veterinary therapeutics : research in applied veterinary medicine    May 21, 2005   Volume 6, Issue 1 57-66
Anderson D, Kollias-Baker C, Colahan P, Keene RO, Lynn RC, Hepler DI.The liposomal cream formulation of diclofenac, an NSAID, is an effective, safe, and convenient way to treat localized areas of inflammation in horses. The results of this study reveal urinary and serum concentrations of diclofenac following topical administration of 1% liposomal diclofenac cream for 10 days at the labeled dose and at 2X and 4X the labeled dose. These results demonstrate the slow absorption and elimination of 1% liposomal diclofenac cream and may be useful when estimating the withdrawal time needed before a competition in order to prevent an inadvertent positive drug test.

Journal of pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis    May 3, 2005   Volume 37, Issue 5 1031-1038 doi: 10.1016/j.jpba.2004.08.041
Yu NH, Ho EN, Leung DK, Wan TS.Anabolic steroids have the capability of improving athletic performance and are banned substances in the Olympic games as well as in horseracing and equestrian competitions. The control of their abuse in racehorses is traditionally performed by detecting the presence of anabolic steroids and/or their metabolite(s) in urine samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, this approach usually requires tedious sample processing and chemical derivatisation steps and could be very insensitive in detecting certain steroids. This paper describes a high performance liquid chromat...

Rapid communications in mass spectrometry : RCM    July 30, 2004   Volume 18, Issue 14 1553-1560 doi: 10.1002/rcm.1518
Thevis M, Opfermann G, Krug O, Schänzer W.Isotope-dilution mass spectrometry has been employed successfully in numerous fields of analytical chemistry enabling the establishment of fast and reliable procedures. In equine sports, xanthine derivatives such as caffeine and theobromine are prohibited, and doping control laboratories analyze horse urine specimens regarding these illicit performance-enhancing drugs. Theobromine has to exceed a threshold level of 2 microg/mL, hence a robust and reliable quantitation is required. Stably deuterated theobromine and caffeine were synthesized by the reaction of xanthine or theobromine with iodome...
Detection of endogenous boldenone in the entire male horses.
Journal of chromatography. B, Analytical technologies in the biomedical and life sciences    July 21, 2004   Volume 808, Issue 2 287-294 doi: 10.1016/j.jchromb.2004.05.018
Ho EN, Yiu KC, Tang FP, Dehennin L, Plou P, Bonnaire Y, Wan TS.Boldenone (1,2-dehydrotestosterone) is a common veterinary anabolic agent. Its structure is very similar to testosterone. Testosterone is endogenous in the horse, whereas there has been no report concerning the detection of endogenous boldenone. This paper reports the direct observation of sulphate conjugate of boldenone in equine urine from entires. The detection procedures involved solid-phase extraction, immunoaffinity column (IAC) purification, and then LC-MS-MS analysis on a Q-ToF instrument. The identification of boldenone sulphate has provided direct evidence for the endogenous nature o...

Effect of furosemide on urine specific gravity and osmolality in thoroughbred racehorses.
Veterinary therapeutics : research in applied veterinary medicine    May 12, 2004   Volume 4, Issue 3 292-298
Bosken JM, Tobin T, Mundy GD, Fisher M, Gantz MG, Banks RO.Postrace urine samples from thoroughbred horses were examined to compare osmolality and specific gravity between horses treated with furosemide and those not treated. Samples were assigned to groups in relation to reported medication (furosemide) status, race finish position, and distance of race. Urine osmolality was significantly (P <.05) lower in samples from horses treated with furosemide when compared with untreated horses. Specific gravity determinations are less precise at measuring urine osmolality at lower levels (1.01 g/ml or less). The measurement of osmolality is a superior meth...
Detection, quantification, and pharmacokinetics of furosemide and its effects on urinary specific gravity following IV administration to horses.
Veterinary therapeutics : research in applied veterinary medicine    May 12, 2004   Volume 4, Issue 4 350-363
Dirikolu L, Lehner AF, Hughes C, Karpiesiuk W, Camargo FC, Harkins JD, Woods WE, Bosken JM, Boyles J, Troppmann A, Fisher M, Tobin T.Furosemide is a potent loop diuretic used for the prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses. This drug may interfere with the detection of other substances by reducing urinary concentrations, so its use is strictly regulated. The regulation of furosemide in many racing jurisdictions is based on paired limits of urinary SG (100 ng/ml). To validate this regulatory mechanism, a liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry method employing a solid-phase extraction procedure and furosemide-d5 as an internal standard was developed. The method was used to determine th...
