Malignant mast cell neoplasia with local metastasis in a horse. A 12-year-old Arab stallion was presented with a chronically swollen right carpus resulting in profound lameness of the same leg. An incisional biopsy of subcutaneous tissue from the right carpus submitted for cytology and histopathology revealed large numbers of eosinophils interspersed by substantial numbers of variably sized and granulated mast cells. Obstructive pulmonary disease in 18 horses at summer pasture. The clinical features of 18 cases of summer pasture associated obstructive pulmonary disease were reviewed. The horses had signs of obstructive pulmonary disease (expiratory dyspnoea, wheezing and crackling lung sounds and coughing) during the spring, summer or autumn while they were kept permanently at grass with no access to hay or straw, for at least two consecutive years. Actinobacillus suis septicaemia in two foals. A 24-hour-old Hackney ony filly developed signs of weakness, depression and a poor suck reflex, with harsh lung sounds over both fields, and a 48-hour-old Arabian colt from a normal birth which had sucked vigorously developed loose stools and became depressed, weak and anorectic. Multiple congenital cardiac anomalies and idiopathic thoracic aortitis in a horse. An echocardiographical and clinical pathological investigation of the rapid loss of weight by a yearling thoroughbred filly revealed an atrial septal defect, a ventricular septal defect and hyperfibrinogenaemia. A post mortem examination confirmed the cardiac abnormalities and revealed a severe thoracic aortitis. It is proposed that the idiopathic thoracic aortitis contributed to the horse's compromised cardiovascular homoeostasis.

Acute post-treatment enterocolitis in 13 horses treated in a Norwegian surgical ward. Case histories, results of laboratory analyses, treatment regimens and outcome are described for 13 horses that developed acute enterocolitis after various surgical treatments. Twelve of the 13 horses had been cast in lateral recumbency, and 10 of those 12 had received general anesthesia. Eleven horses had been treated with antimicrobial drugs. Automated differential leukocyte count in horses, cattle, and cats using the Technicon H-1E hematology system. The differential leukocyte counts performed by an automated hematology analyzer, the Technicon H-1E Hematology System, and traditional microscopic method (M-Diff) from blood samples of 129 horses, 40 cattle, and 140 cats were compared. The vasomotor effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine on equine basilar arteries in vitro. The vasomotor effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on isolated equine basilar arteries were studied. 5-HT induced contractions of equine basilar arteries in a concentration-dependent manner, with a pEC50 value (with 95% confidence limits) of 7.35 (7.08-7.62). Similar results were obtained with endothelium-denuded basilar arteries. Contractions were not competitively inhibited by the 5-HT2 receptor antagonist ketanserin at low concentrations of 5-HT. Equine papillary ependymoma. A 17-year-old Arabian gelding with progressive neurologic signs had a velvety, reddish brain tumor protruding from the ventral midline caudal to the optic chiasma. Congenital cleft vertebral centrum and intra- and extraspinal cyst in a foal. A midsagittal centrum cleft of T5-6, malformation and fusion of T3-7, intra- and extraspinal cyst, and myelodysplasia were found in a 3-month-old female Arabian foal that had experienced posterior ataxia since birth. An 125I radioimmunoassay to determine the pattern of urinary excretion of etorphine (a semisynthetic opiate agonist) after its administration to horses is described. Serum progesterone levels in mares in winter and during transitional periods. Weekly blood samples were collected for serum progesterone determination from 68 mares during the period from September 1990 to June 1991. Five experiments were conducted to evaluate damage incurred in each processing step for cryopreservation of stallion spermatozoa. Effect of timing of frozen semen insemination on pregnancy rate in mares. Thirty-four mares were inseminated with frozen semen from one stallion during 2 oestrous cycles, every 48 h until ovulation took place and within 12 h after ovulation. [Occurrence of Parascaris equorum in foals and adult horses under different breeding conditions]. Autopsies and analyses of faecal samples from working horses have shown common occurrence of ascarids in foals, whereas 19.6% of adult horses have been found infected. No influence of season on EPG in adult horses has been found.
