Composition and morphologic features of the interosseous muscle in Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds. Suspensory ligaments (SL) from 32 Thoroughbreds and 32 Standardbreds were collected to evaluate the variation in muscle content with respect to age, breed, sex, limb, and use. Glycosaminoglycan concentrations in horse plasma and serum. Differences with other animal species and identification of affecting factors. 1. The measured values of acid glycosaminoglycan (GAG) concentration in plasma or in serum show significant differences between trained and untrained horses and among sedentary horses and other animal species (cattle, rabbit, sheep). 2. Diurnal variations in serum GAG levels are reported (cattle), and changes in plasma GAG concentrations after road transport (horses) and in late pregnancy (mares, cows), while sex, age and breed do not affect them.
The effect of acute exercise on the secretion of corticotropin-releasing factor, arginine vasopressin, and adrenocorticotropin as measured in pituitary venous blood from the horse. We have used the technique which we have developed for collecting pituitary venous blood from conscious, undisturbed horses to study the effect of acute vigorous exercise on the secretion of CRF, arginine vasopressin (AVP) and ACTH. Pituitary venous (pit) blood was collected every 1-5 min from nine trained racehorses at rest in the stable. Onset of luteal activity in non-foaling mares during the early breeding season in Finland. The luteal activity in mares was studied in the Equine Research Station (ERS) and in trotting stables (TS) in South-Finland. The mares were Standardbreeds in the TS and mainly Finnhorses in the ERS. Between January and June blood was collected once a week for serum progesterone determinations. Thermophilic and thermotolerant fungi of animals’ hair. Nine thermophilic genera and 17 species in addition to one variety of Aspergillus flavus, Malbranchea pulchella and Humicola grisea were collected from hair samples in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at 45 degrees C. Effect of sexual arousal on gonadotrophin-releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion in the stallion. In an experiment conducted late in the physiological breeding season, 5 stallions were fitted with indwelling pituitary venous cannulae that permitted unobtrusive collection of blood coming from the pituitary and the hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal vessels. [CEA test in domestic animals]. In human cancer treatment, CEA (carcino embryonic antigen) testing is a routine procedure, even though the test is of low sensitivity (40%) and low specificity (70%). Since tests with polyclonal antibodies render no reproducible results with animal sera, the applicability of a recently available monoclonal CEA test designed for human sera was evaluated. We were able to show that the latter test was of supplemental diagnostic value when testing animal sera. The upper normal limit for dogs is 1.65 ng/ml, for cats 2.81 ng/ml, for cows 2.85 ng/ml, for sheep 2.85 ng/ml and for horses 1.61 ng/ml.
Urinary excretion of theobromine in horses given contaminated pelleted food. A high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for measuring the theobromine content in cocoa husks, pelleted food and horse urine is described. Starting with 2 ml of urine, concentrations of 500 ng/ml could easily be detected. When feed containing 38.4 mg of theobromine was given twice daily to horses for 2 1/2 days, two days were needed after the last intake before the theobromine concentrations fell below the threshold value of 2 micrograms/ml. Lung contains an inhibitor for nicotinatemononucleotide pyrophosphorylase (carboxylating) of NAD biosynthesis. Rat, cow and foal lung extracts contained an inhibitor for the liver NAD biosynthetic-pathway enzyme, nicotinatemononucleotide pyrophosphorylase (carboxylating) [EC 2.4.2.19]. The inhibitor was not dialyzable, was labile at 100 degrees C, was retained by a 30,000 dalton pore size Amicon membrane and, when partially purified by precipitation at 40-100% ammonium sulfate, inhibited the enzyme stoichiometrically. Isolation of equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells using Percoll. The concentration of Percoll required for isolating equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells has been reinvestigated. A poor cell yield was obtained at the 60 per cent concentration already reported. It is recommended that workers specifically interested in high yields of mononuclear cells, for investigation of lymphocyte and monocyte functions, use a concentration of 65 per cent Percoll. However, workers wishing to isolate pure populations of equine neutrophils might consider a concentration of 70 per cent in the upper layer of Percoll used to retain the mononuclear cells.
Inheritance of the equine Tf F3 allele. The inheritance of the equine Tf F3 allele was examined in 39 parent-offspring combinations. For 26 of the cases the allele inherited by the offspring from the heterozygous parent could be determined. The proportion of individuals that inherited the F3 variant compared to the alternative allele was exactly 1:1. In five cases the parental phenotype was identical to that of the offspring. For the remaining eight cases the parent was homozygous for the F3 allele and all offspring had the F3 allele. The results were consistent with Mendelian inheritance.
Penetration of frozen-thawed, zona-free hamster oocytes by fresh and slow-cooled stallion spermatozoa. A method for preparing stored unfrozen stallion spermatozoa for the zona-free hamster oocyte penetration test (HOPT) and a subsequent comparison of fresh and stored sperm by the HOPT were evaluated. Muscle ATP loss and lactate accumulation at different work intensities in the exercising Thoroughbred horse. The effect of 2 min treadmill exercise, at speeds of 6-12 m.s-1 on an incline of 5 degrees, upon muscle adenine nucleotide loss and lactate accumulation was studied in six Thoroughbred horses. Minimal change occurred in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content of the middle gluteal muscle at speeds of 10 m.s-1 or less, but significant loss (up to 47%) had occurred in all horses by 12 m.s-1. Correlation of myosin isoforms with anatomical divisions in equine musculus biceps brachii. The biceps brachii of horses is subdivided into a lateral and medial head. Electrophoresis of samples from the lateral head revealed three slow-migrating native myosin isoforms, including one that does not correspond to slow myosin isoforms described for other mammalian muscles. A rare GC mutant in horses disclosed by isoelectric focusing and subsequent immunoprinting. An apparent incompatibility in the GC/DBP system in a mare and her colt was found after classification by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Because of this observation an analysis of the equine GC/DBP system by isoelectric focusing and subsequent immunoprinting was initiated. Portable data acquisition cart for equine transportation stress study. A remote data sampling cart has been designed and built for studying environmental factors that produce stress in horses during transportation. [The estimation of platelet factor 3 activity in horses, cattle, sheep and pigs by the use of synthetic chromogenic tripeptide substrates]. The aim of this study was to investigate the platelet factor 3 activity in platelet-rich plasma of horse, cattle, sheep and pig, by the use of chromogenic tripeptide substrate H-D-Phenylalanyl-Pipecolyl-Arginyl-p-nitroanilide. Among species examined the highest activity of this factor was stated in pig, the lowest one in sheep. Chromogenic substrate test was 10 times more sensitive that Stypven clotting time test. Thus, the use of chromogenic tripeptide substrate is fully valuable in platelet factor 3 activity estimation in domestic animals.
