Abdominal cryptorchidectomy in the horse, using inguinal extension of the gubernaculum testis.
Abstract: Removal of abdominal testes was accomplished in 32 horses ranging in age from 6 to 72 months. Twenty were unilateral and 12 were bilateral abdominal cryptorchids. An incision was made over the superficial inguinal ring, and the extension of the gubernaculum testis was identified and grasped with forceps. Traction was applied to this structure until the vaginal process was everted beyond the superficial inguinal ring. The vaginal process was incised and the protruding structure, usually the epididymis, was grasped. The testis was drawn out by gentle traction on the epididymis, and castration was performed in the routine manner.

The research describes a technique of abdominal testes removal in horses using inguinal extension of gubernaculum testis.
Study Objectives and Design
- The aim of the study was to remove abdominal testes in horses by effectively locating and using the inguinal extension of the gubernaculum testis.
- The study observed this surgical procedure in action over a diverse range of ages in horses, from 6 months to 72 months old.
Methodology
- An incision was made over the superficial inguinal ring to expose the gubernaculum testis.
- The extension of the gubernaculum testis was spotted and grabbed with the aid of forceps.
- Traction was used on this anatomical structure, resulting in the eversion of the vaginal process beyond the superficial inguinal ring.
- The vaginal process was then incised, unveiling a protruding structure. The usual structure encountered here was the epididymis.
Procedure and Resulting Actions
- The testis was gently drawn out by deploying traction to the epididymis. This technique avoids any undue harsh force during the extraction process.
- Castration was executed in the usual method after successful extraction of the testis.
Potential Impact and Takeaway
- This study offers evidence of a successful and safe technique for the removal of abdominal testes in horses, something that could benefit equine veterinary practices.
- In addition to this, the approach could devise a viable template for similar medical procedures in larger animals where castration is required.
