Advances in equine ultrasonography.
Abstract: The digital storage and transfer of images coupled with the development of the Internet have revolutionized diagnostic imaging. With the press of a button, practitioners can exploit the diagnostic skills of specialists anywhere in the world and enlist their help with challenging cases. This easy transfer of images and digital data should stimulate a greater number of multicenter studies so that the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonographic techniques can be established in larger and more meaningful cohorts of patients. There is now no doubt that we can identify a plethora of conditions of the horse with ultrasonography; however, there is a continuing need to look critically at how we use such information to improve patient management and outcome.

The article explores how the rise of digital technology and the internet has substantially improved equine (horse) diagnostic imaging, particularly through ultrasonography. With this technology, veterinarians can collaborate with specialists worldwide for complex cases. Additionally, these advancements encourage larger multicenter studies that help optimize the accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of ultrasonographic techniques for better horse healthcare.
Role of Digital Technology in Ultrasonography
- The paper discusses how digital technology advancements affect diagnostic imaging. As the images can be digitally stored and transferred, veterinary specialists can review them from anywhere in the world. This remote access allows them to provide their expertise in challenging cases and could potentially lead to more accurate diagnoses.
Internet-Enabled Multicenter Studies
- The authors highlight the role of the internet in fostering multicenter studies. As the transfer of digital data and images has become smoother, it’s now easier to conduct large-scale studies that involve collaborations across different centers or locations globally. Multicenter studies significantly improve the statistical power and external validity of the results, providing more reliable estimates of the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonographic techniques.
Improving Patient Management and Outcome
- The goal of these advancements in equine ultrasonography is not just to improve diagnostic capabilities but also to enhance patient management and outcomes. The authors argue that, although we can now identify numerous horse conditions using ultrasonography, we need to continue looking critically at how we can use this information to benefit the horses’ health and overall wellbeing.
