Ageing Arab horses by their dentition.
Abstract: The dentition of 170 Arab horses of known ages was examined and compared with the dental characteristics of trotter horses and Belgian draft horses of the same ages. The results indicated that inaccuracies in the determination of the age of horses by their dentition may result, at least partly, from differences between the breeds of horse involved because there were some major differences between the three breeds examined. These differences increased as the horses' true age increased. In general, the rate of dental wear was slower in the Arab horses than in trotter horses and Belgian draft horses.

The research article is about a study that examined the accuracy of age determination in horses by looking at their teeth. The study compared the dentition of three different breeds – Arab horses, Trotter horses, and Belgian draft horses – and found significant differences in dental wear, which increases with age, notably slower in Arab horses.
Objective and Methodology
- The research’s aim was to evaluate the accuracy of determining the age of horses through their dentition. The tooth wear and other dental characteristics of 170 Arab horses of known ages were examined in detail.
- The researchers compared these dental characteristics with Trotter horses and Belgian draft horses of the same ages. This cross-comparison was done to identify any potential breed-specific variations in dentition.
Findings
- The results of this investigation revealed that dental wear patterns and characteristics differ significantly among the three examined horse breeds.
- The researchers found that such inaccuracies in the age determination process might be due to these cross-breed differences in dentition.
- The differences between the breeds became more prominent as the actual age of the horses increased.
- Generally, dental wear was observed to be slower in Arab horses compared to Trotter horses and Belgian draft horses.
Implications
- This study’s findings emphasise the need to consider breed-specific characteristics when determining a horse’s age based on their dentition.
- It suggests that while dental wear can give an indication of a horse’s age, relying on dentition alone without considering the breed and specific dental wear patterns can lead to inaccuracies.
- This research could pave the way for revising or enhancing existing practices and methods of age estimation in horses for more accurate results.
