Assessment of animal diseases caused by bacteria resistant to antimicrobials: Horses.

Abstract: In this opinion, the antimicrobial-resistant bacteria responsible for transmissible diseases that constitute a threat to the health of horses have been assessed. The assessment has been performed following a methodology composed of information collected via an extensive literature review and expert judgement. Details on the methodology used for this assessment are explained in a separate opinion. A global state of play of antimicrobial-resistant spp. spp. and subsp and subsp. and subsp. has been provided. Among those bacteria, EFSA identified , and with more than 66% certainty as the most relevant antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the EU, given their importance as causative agents of clinical disease in horses and the significant levels of resistance to clinically relevant antimicrobials. The animal health impact of these 'most relevant' bacteria as well as their eligibility of being listed and categorised within the animal health law framework will be assessed in separate scientific opinions.

This research evaluates the impact of bacteria resistant to antimicrobials, which are harmful to horse health. The investigation involved an extensive literature review and expert judgement, identifying certain bacteria strains that are likely to be the most significant antimicrobial-resistant threats to horses in the EU.

Research methodology

  • This research evaluated antimicrobial-resistant bacteria that cause diseases threatening the health of horses.
  • The process involved collecting information through an extensive literature review and soliciting expert opinion. The specifics of the methodology used, however, are explained in a separate paper.
  • A comprehensive review was given of antimicrobial-resistant strains such as spp. spp. and subsp, and variations of these bacteria.

Findings

  • The research identified, with over 66% certainty, three types of bacteria which are the most relevant in the European Union due to their significant levels of resistance to clinically relevant antimicrobials. These bacteria are vital agents of clinical disease in horses.
  • Unfortunately, the names of these bacteria strains have not been provided in the given abstract.

Future research

  • The study concludes with a proposal for future scientific opinions to assess the animal health impact of the identified ‘most relevant’ bacteria.
  • The authors suggest further investigation into whether these bacteria should be listed and categorised under the animal health law framework for better regulation and control.
