Basic Postoperative Care of the Equine Colic Patient.

Abstract: The 3 time periods around colic surgery (preoperative, operative, and postoperative) are all critical to successful outcomes. Although much focus is often paid to the first 2 time periods, the importance of sound clinical judgment and rational decision-making in the postoperative period cannot be overstated. This article will outline the basic principles of monitoring, fluid therapy, antimicrobial therapy, analgesia, nutrition, and other therapeutics routinely used in patients following colic surgery. Discussions of the economics of colic surgery and expectations for normal return to function will also be included.

This research article focuses on the criticality and principles of postoperative care for horses that have undergone colic surgery, encompassing necessary monitoring, fluid therapy, antimicrobial therapies, pain relief, nutrition, and other consistent therapeutics.

Postoperative Care Principles

The paper presents the significance of optimal postoperative care for the successful health outcomes of horses that underwent colic surgery. All three stages surrounding the surgery, namely preoperative, operative and postoperative are vital, but this paper particularly emphasizes the postoperative period.

  • The researchers underscore the necessity for consistent monitoring of the patient, which is pivotal in tracking the horse’s recovery progress, identifying any potential complications early, and making necessary modifications to the treatment plan.
  • They discuss the role and administration of fluid therapy quenching hydration needs and maintaining the balance of electrolytes and acid-base status, which could be jeopardized following surgery.
  • The paper mentions antimicrobial therapy, an essential postoperative intervention to prevent infection risks that could potentially arise from a surgical procedure.
  • Analgesia, or pain management, is another crucial aspect highlighted, aimed towards ensuring the comfort of the horse and facilitating smooth recovery.

Nutrition and Other Therapeutics

Additionally, the article touches upon the role of proper nutrition and other routine therapeutics in bolstering recovery after colic surgery.

  • Nutrition is one of the most crucial aspects contributing to the horse’s strength and speed of recovery. The paper discusses how dietary requirements might vary post-surgery and how they should be met to ensure overall wellbeing and health of the horse.
  • The researchers also outline other routine therapeutics that are administered to promote healing and aid recovery. While the specifics of these therapeutics are not detailed in the abstract, they would typically include medication, wound care, and physical therapy among others.

Economic Aspects and Expectations for Return to Function

Finally, the paper digresses slightly from direct postoperative care to discuss the economics of the surgery and the expected timeline for the horse to return to its pre-surgery functions.

  • The authors cover the financial aspect of colic surgery, a detail of great interest to horse owners and caretakers given that such surgeries are often major procedures associated with substantial costs.
  • Moreover, the paper outlines the expected timeline and prospects for the horse’s return to its normal functions following the surgery. This prospect is significant to owners, trainers, and the broader equine industry.
