Correlation of quantitative computed tomographic subchondral bone density and ash density in horses.

This study investigates the correlation between subchondral bone density measurements derived from CT scans, and ash density results from intact horse joints, and explores if there are identifiable anatomic variations in average subchondral bone density.

Objective and Methodology

• The research aimed to compare subchondral bone density obtained through quantitative computed tomography (QCT), which is a specialized CT scan technique, with the ash density values that come from intact equine (horse) joints.
• The study involved five adult horse metacarpophalangeal joints. These joints were scanned using a CT scanner.
• Four one-cubic-centimeter regions of interest (ROIs) were then extracted from the distal part of the third metacarpal bone, after disarticulating the joints.
• The bone cubes were then ashed, and the percent mineralization and ash density were recorded.

Analysis and Results

• Three-dimensional models of the distal third metacarpal bone were created using CT images.
• Four ROIs were measured on the third metacarpal bone’s distal aspect at axial (central) and abaxial (peripheral) sites of the medial and lateral condyles (knuckles) for correlation with the ash samples.
• The study found overall correlations of mean QCT density with ash density (r=0.82) and percent mineralization (r=0.93) were strong.
• In the quantitative data, significant differences emerged between abaxial and axial ROIs for mean QCT density, percent bone mineralization and ash density.

Conclusion

• According to the study’s findings, QCT appears to be a robust method for measuring bone density in horse subchondral bone.
• The study also found that differences exist in the density of axial and abaxial subchondral bone within the equine distal third metacarpal bone.
