Equine travellers to the Olympic Games in Hong Kong 2008: a review of worldwide challenges to equine health, with particular reference to vector-borne diseases.
Abstract: The past 10-20 years have seen exponential growth in the volume of trade in horses and equine germplasm; and the extent of global horse movements has increased significantly in the last 4 years. In preparing for the transport of elite Olympic horses to Hong Kong in 2008, it will be very important to be as fully informed as possible of the disease situation in both the exporting and importing country, import and re-entry requirements, as well as having a vaccination strategy to protect against particular diseases. In this context the review describes the equine vector-borne disease situation in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America and provides estimates of the number of horse movements between these countries, as well as information on import requirements and vaccination strategies.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research article discusses about the growth in global horse trading and movement, and its potential implications on equine health, focusing on vector-borne diseases. It emphasizes the necessity of well-informed plans for transporting horses, especially for events like the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong.
Increased Global Horse Trade and Movement
- The research notes a significant rise in global trade of horses and horse germplasm over the past two decades, with a notable surge in global horse movements in the preceding four years. This increase poses a challenge to equine health as it could potentially facilitate the spread of diseases.
Preparation for Horse Transportation
- Given the health risks, the article underscores the necessity of comprehensive preparation when transporting horses, particularly for major events like the Olympics. A key part of this preparation involves being fully aware of the disease situation in both the exporting and importing countries. Understanding import and re-entry requirements is also crucial.
Vector-Borne Diseases
- The research paper specifically focuses on vector-borne diseases, which are infections transmitted through the bites of infected arthropod species, such as mosquitoes or ticks. These diseases present a significant risk to horses and can be easily spread through movement and trade.
Equine Disease Situation Worldwide
- The article provides an overview of the equine vector-borne disease situation in numerous regions across the globe including Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. It is particularly relevant for those involved in move of horses between countries, given the disease’s ability to spread across borders.
Vaccination Strategies
- In closing, the research emphasizes on the importance of vaccination strategies to protect horses against specific diseases during their transportation. Ensuring horses are well-vaccinated can not only protect the individual animals, but also help prevent the spread of diseases internationally.
