First detection of equine coronavirus (ECoV) in Europe.

Abstract: Equine coronavirus (ECoV) is involved mainly in enteric infections. Following the recent description of ECoV in 2000, this study reports for the first time the presence of ECoV in France and, on a wider scale, in Europe. ECoV was molecularly detected from diarrheic and respiratory specimens. Sequencing and phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that European strains are most closely related to the reference North American strain (ECoV-NC99) than the Asian strain (ECoV-Tokachi09).

This research article presents the first-ever detection of Equine Coronavirus (ECoV) in Europe, specifically in France. The study further analyzed the genetic similarity of the discovered ECoV with established strains from North America and Asia.

Introduction

  • Equine Coronavirus (ECoV) is a prevalent pathogen causing enteric infections mainly in horses.
  • Prior to this investigation, ECoV had only been reported in Asia and North America with no previous records in European region.
  • This study marked the first documentation of the ECoV in Europe, namely in France.

Methodology

  • The researchers used molecular detection methods to identify the presence of ECoV in various sample types.
  • Both diarrheic and respiratory specimens were tested for the presence of ECoV.
  • Doing so provided a broad range analysis of potential infection pathways.

Results

  • ECoV was successfully identified in the tested samples, marking the first detection in Europe.
  • Further, the researchers engaged in sequencing and phylogenetic analyses to comprehend the genetic relationship of the detected ECoV with already established strains.
  • The analysis demonstrated that the European strains shared closer genetic similarities with the North American strain (tagged as ECoV-NC99) as opposed to the Asian strain (known as ECoV-Tokachi09).

Implications

  • This research significantly contributes to the understanding of ECoV geographical distribution and its evolution.
  • The finding underscores the necessity for broader and continuous monitoring of ECoV, considering its apparent spread globally.
  • Moreover, the genetic closeness determination with North American strain could be critical in developing effective preventative and treatment strategies in Europe.
