Home care for horses with chronic laminitis.
Abstract: Home care for horses with chronic laminitis has been discussed rarely in the veterinary literature even though, at any given time, most of us have at least 1 chronic laminitis case in our care that is being managed at home by the owner. Almost all of our knowledge on this aspect of laminitis treatment has been gleaned through experience, by individually working through the medical, ethical, financial, and emotional challenges these cases can present. Much has already been presented on the medical management of the laminitic horse and on strategies for trimming and shoeing the laminitic foot. This article focuses on the other challenges so often faced when directing the home care of a horse with chronic laminitis.

The research article discusses the largely unexplored topic of home care for horses suffering from chronic laminitis, emphasizing the various medical, ethical, financial, and emotional challenges that this condition can pose.
Understanding the Research
- Chronic laminitis in horses is a common, painful condition that often requires extended care and treatment. Despite many owners managing this condition at home, veterinary literature has seldom focused on this aspect of horse care.
- The researchers state that much of the information available on home care for horses with chronic laminitis has been gathered through first-hand experience of the challenges faced, rather than through formal research.
- While much has been written regarding the medical management of horses with laminitis and methods of trimming and shoeing the laminitic foot, this paper seeks to explore the other challenges owners often encounter. These can include balancing the ethics of treatment, managing the financial burden and handling the emotional stress of caring for a sick horse.
Key Focus Areas
- The article works towards filling the knowledge gap in veterinary literature about the non-medical aspects of managing chronic laminitis in horses at home, indicating a need for enhanced understanding and support for horse owners dealing with this condition.
- The discussion in the paper revolves around methodologies for handling the medical, ethical, financial, and emotional challenges that owners might face, aiming to provide insights, tips or guidelines for managing these different aspects.
- In continually drawing the distinction between the medical and non-medical aspects of managing horse health, the research suggests that there might be specific gaps in understanding or insufficient consideration of the personal and emotional toll on owners offering home care for horses with chronic laminitis.
