Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Equine Rehabilitation: Putting the Pressure on Disease.
Abstract: There are several beneficial physiologic and therapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The indications list for the use of HBOT in the horse has been developed through extrapolation from a review of human indications and from anecdotal clinical experiences. Hyperbaric therapy is a safe treatment option with very few side effects when administered properly.

The study investigates the application and benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) as a treatment method for horses, specifically in rehabilitation and disease management.
Study Objective and Methodology
- The main goal of this study was to explore the physiological and medicinal impacts of HBOT on horses and to establish guidelines for its use. Practical data from human studies and clinical experiences were extrapolated in order to gather findings.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
- HBOT is a treatment in which a patient is exposed to 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure, typically inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows the oxygen to dissolve more effectively into the body’s tissues, which can aid in the recovery of damaged or diseased tissues.
Potential Uses of HBOT in Equine Medicine
- Although most feedback on HBOT’s use in equine treatment comes from clinical experiences and human studies, it displays great potential in treating several equine conditions. This includes tissue injury, laminitis, colic, foal pneumonia, and conditions associated with reduced blood flow.
Safety and Side Effects
- According to the study, HBOT is considered a safe treatment option for horses when administered correctly. The side effects are supposedly minimal, although the report does not detail what these potential side effects could be.
Conclusion
- Overall, the study suggests that HBOT can be an effective part of equine rehabilitation and disease management. Future research should focus on firm directives for its use and developing a clear understanding of potential side effects in equine patients.
