Managing obesity in pasture-based horses.
Abstract: Obesity - a common problem in pasture-based horses - warrants intervention because it is associated with an increased risk for development of laminitis. Treating obesity in pasture-based horses is relatively simple and generally involves reducing caloric intake by using grazing muzzles and/or increasing caloric expenditure through exercise. To prevent recurrence of obesity after weight loss, clients should be educated on how to monitor body condition and to adjust feeding and management programs to maintain proper body condition.

This paper explores effective ways of managing obesity in pasture-based horses, including methods such as using grazing muzzles and increasing exercise, and emphasizes the importance of educating horse owners in maintaining their horses at a healthy weight.
Overview of the Research
- The research aimed at establishing effective strategies for managing obesity in pasture-based horses. The motivation behind the study is the realization that obesity is a common problem in horses that primarily graze in the pasture. More than just an aesthetic issue, obesity is a serious health concern as it exposes the horses to a higher risk of acquiring laminitis, a painful and potentially debilitating hoof condition.
Intervention Approaches
- The paper explores a two-fold strategy for managing obesity – reducing caloric intake and boosting caloric expenditure. In principle, the approach is fairly simple – use grazing muzzles on the horses to limit the amount of grass they consume and hence restrict calorie intake. Employ a more active exercise regimen to increase the horses’ caloric burn. The combined effect of these measures aids in reducing excessive body weight.
Preventing Recurrence
- Beyond just the immediate treatment, the paper highlights the cruciality of preventing the recurrence of obesity. The criticality of client education is highlighted as one of the main tools for sustaining healthy body conditions in horses post the weight loss phase. By learning how to monitor the body conditions of their animals, they can identify weight gain trends early and step in with weight management measures to avert full obesity relapse.
Importance of Adjusted Feeding Programs
- The study suggests that successful maintenance of a healthy weight post-weight loss also relies heavily on feeding and management programs. It recommends adjusting feeding programs to match the horse’s energy needs accurately. Maintaining proper body condition is not solely about how much food the horse eats, but also about the nutritional content of the diet. Therefore, owners need to work closely with veterinary experts to outline and apply feeding programs that align with their horse’s specific needs.
