[Medial motor nucleus in the lumbosacral segment of the spinal cord of the horse].

Abstract: The studies carried out on 2 spinal cords of horses showed that cells of the medial motor nucleus (nucleus motorius medialis) are present in all neuromers of the lumbar and sacral segment of the spinal cord. It lies in the medial part of grey matter of the ventral column, neighbouring laterally and ventrally with cells of the lateral motor nucleus, whereas dorsally with cells of the nucleus of the ventral commissural horn. Along the nucleus numerous constrictions and intervals are found, which are connected with various numbers of nerve cells in particular cross-sections.

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research study focuses on the spinal cord of horses, specifically investigating the presence and configuration of cells within the medial motor nucleus in the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord.

Objective of the Study

  • The research aims to map and understand the distribution of cells in the medial motor nucleus – a segment of the spinal cord – in horses. It particularly investigates the lumbar and sacral segments of the spinal cord.

Main Findings of the Study

  • The studies were conducted on two horse spinal cords, which revealed the presence of cells of the medial motor nucleus in all neuromers (anatomic units) present in both the lumbar and sacral spinal cord segments.
  • The medial motor nucleus is positioned within a portion of the grey matter of the ventral column of the spinal cord, specifically in its medial part. It shares borders on the side and ventral side with cells of the lateral motor nucleus whereas, dorsally (toward the back), it neighbors the cells of the nucleus of the ventral commissural horn.
  • Detailed observation of the nucleus highlighted the presence of numerous constrictions and intervals, which are associated with a variant number of nerve cells in specific cross-sections.

Significance of the Study

  • This research provides valuable insights into the configuration and cellular organization of the horse’s spinal cord, particularly shedding light on the structure and placement of the medial motor nucleus within the lumbar and sacral segments.
  • Such detailed understanding could contribute to veterinary neuroanatomy, neurological examination in horses and could potentially pave the way for more advanced studies concerning equine spinal cord-related disorders and diseases.
