[Micronema deletrix as the cause of a granulomatous nephritis in a horse].

Abstract: Infections with Micronema deletrix are described sporadically in humans and horses. This case report describes the infection with Micronema deletrix in a horse. The animal was sent to the clinic because of recurrent colic. On rectal palpation a mass was detected in the area of the right kidney and the horse was destroyed on its owners request. At slaughter a greatly enlarged right kidney interspersed with numerous white nodules was found. Histological examination revealed a granulomatous nephritis with numerous sections of nematodes. Based on their morphology and size, they were identified as Micronema.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article narrates a case of a horse infected with Micronema deletrix, which is a rare type of nematode infection that resulted in inflammation of the kidney with distinct granulomatous characteristics.

Micronema deletrix Infection in Horses

  • The organism in focus, Micronema deletrix, is an infrequently occurring nematode known to infect horses and humans. Infections of this nematode are sparsely documented. The study centers on a particular case in which a horse was infected by this nematode.
  • The horse was brought to a clinic due to recurring instances of colic, an abdominal pain that can cause severe discomfort in horses. On rectal examination, a mass formation was detected near the horse’s right kidney.
  • Given the severity of its condition, the horse had to be put down as requested by its owner. Post-mortem analysis revealed enlarged right kidney interspersed with numerous white nodular structures.

Identification and Impact of Micronema deletrix

  • The kidney condition was analyzed histologically, revealing a granulomatous nephritis, which is an inflammatory kidney condition characterised by granulomas, compact collections of inflammatory cells. The inflammation was observed to be interspersed with numerous nematodes.
  • The nematodes were identified based on their morphological characteristics and size as Micronema deletrix. The particular nematode is known to cause granulomatous inflammation in tissues, thus explaining the inflammation with characteristic granulomas found in the horse’s kidney.
  • The study thus presents a rare case of Micronema deletrix infection in a horse, providing valuable insights into its manifestation and its consequences on the infected host.
