Mycoplasma felis as a cause of pleuritis in horses.

This research article investigates the role of Mycoplasma felis, a bacterial species, in causing pleuritis, an inflammation of the lining around the lungs, in horses. Objective and Methods

• A fluid sample from the principal pony’s thoracic cavity showed a highly cellular exudate with non-degenerating neutrophils (indicating a response to infection) and a large number of M. felis bacteria.

• Fourteen days after the inoculation, both ponies were euthanized and a post-mortem exam was performed. As expected, the principal pony had signs of inflammation in the chest lining consistent with pleuritis, while the control pony did not have any abnormal findings.
