[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2012].
Abstract: In 2012, two newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients for horses and food producing animals were released on the German market for veterinary drug products. Those are the parenterally applicable first generation cephalosporin Cefalonium (Cepravin®) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug Suxibuzone (Danilon®). Furthermore, one established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredient is applicable to additional species: The anticoccidial Amprolium (Eimeryl®) has again been authorized for chicken and turkeys. Additionally, two veterinary drugs with a new formulation as well as three products with a new strength and one product with a new indication have recently been released to the veterinary drugs market for horses and food producing animals.

This research article discusses the introduction and adaptation of new pharmaceutical drugs for horses and food producing animals in 2012 in Germany. The report presents two newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients – Cepravin and Danilon – and an old veterinary substance Amprolium (Eimeryl) that’s now approved for additional species. The article also mentions other new formulations, strengths, and indications of existing veterinary drugs.
Introduction of New Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
- The paper begins by discussing the introduction of two new active pharmaceutical ingredients into the German market for veterinary drug products in 2012. These are the first-generation cephalosporin known as Cefalonium (branded as Cepravin) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug named Suxibuzone (branded as Danilon).
- These drugs have been created with the specific purpose of treatment in horses and other food-producing animals.
Amprolium for Additional Species
- A major topic in the paper is the reauthorization of the use of the anticoccidial medication Amprolium (Eimeryl) for previously unapproved species.
- The article informs that this established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredient can now be used in chickens and turkeys, expanding the overall usability of the drug.
New Formulations, Strengths, and Indications
- The article also communicates that there were variations made to existing veterinary drugs during the year, enhancing their effectiveness or broadening their usage.
- Two veterinary drugs were released with a new formulation, meaning the way the drug is assembled or presented was altered, potentially making the medicine more comfortable or enticing for the animal to consume.
- Three more products had a strength adjustment. This would impact the effectiveness of the medication, potentially making it more potent or less so, depending on the needs of the animal.
- Lastly, there was a product that received a new indication, implying that the pharmaceutical has been found effective for treating additional diseases or conditions.
