[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2016].

Abstract: In 2016, only one newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredient for horses and food-producing animals was released on the German market for veterinary drug products. The immunomodulator Pegbovigrastim is now available as an injection solution for cattle (Imrestor). Four established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients are available for further species: the ectoparasitic Amitraz (Apitraz) from the triazapentadiene group was additionally authorized for honeybees, the expectorant Bromhexine (Exflow Vet) for chickens, turkeys and ducks and the macrolide antibiotic Gamithromycin (Zactran) for pigs. The dopamine D receptor agonist Cabergolin (Velactis) was released for dairy cattle. However, the authorization was suspended a few months after market introduction because of severe side effects. Additionally, one veterinary drug with a new combination of active ingredients as well as one active substance in mono-preparation have been launched on the market for horses and food producing animals.

This research paper discusses the introduction of new veterinary drug products in the German market for horses and food-producing animals during 2016. It notes that, though there was only one newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredient (Pegbovigrastim), several pre-existing veterinary pharmaceutical ingredients were made available for new species.

Analysis of Newly Developed Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient

  • The research article talks about Pegbovigrastim, an immunomodulator, as the only freshly developed active pharmaceutical ingredient introduced in 2016. This drug was released in the form of an injection solution for cattle under the brand name Imrestor.

Use of Existing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients in New Species

  • The research indicates that four pre-existing veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients were expanded to new species in 2016. These included Amitraz (Apitraz), an ectoparasitic from the triazapentadiene group, authorised for honeybees; Bromhexine (Exflow Vet), an expectorant for chickens, turkeys, and ducks; and the macrolide antibiotic, Gamithromycin (Zactran), authorised for use in pigs.

Release and Subsequent Suspension of Dopamine D Receptor Agonist

  • The paper discusses the release of Cabergolin (Velactis), a dopamine D receptor agonist specifically produced for dairy cows. However, it also reports that this authorization was suspended a few months after its market introduction due to severe reported side effects.

Launch of New Veterinary Drugs

  • The paper concludes by noting the market introduction of two novel veterinary medicines for horses and food-producing animals. These include a drug with a new combination of active ingredients and an active substance in mono-preparation. However, it does not provide specific details or names for these new drugs.
