[Observations of the development of the equine distal interphalangeal joint cavity concerning the pelvic limb of fetuses, fillies and adult horses].

Abstract: Ten horses, younger than 1 year, were used to investigate the articulatio interphalangea distalis of the pelvic limb. The expansion of the dorsal recess was compared to those of adult horses. The recessus dorsalis always formed a shape like the letter 'm' or like a triangle with oblique angles. Consequently the great proximo-distal expansion on the medial side of the dorsal recess very probably has nothing to do with the age of horses.

This research article presents a study on the development of the distal interphalangeal joint cavity in the pelvic limb of horses, examining young horses less than a year old and comparing these findings with those from adult horses. The study focuses on potential influence of horse’s age on the expansion of the joint cavity.

Research Objective

  • The main objective of this study was to investigate the development and expansion of the distal interphalangeal joint cavity (articulatio interphalangea distalis) in the pelvic limb of horses, and to compare this progress in young horses, less than a year old, with that of adult horses.

Methodology

  • The researchers carried out the study using ten horses that were less than one year old.
  • The focus was on the expansion of the dorsal recess of the distal interphalangeal joint cavity, which was compared with expansion levels in adult horses.

Findings

  • The study discovered that the shape formed by the dorsal recess, regardless of the horse’s age, was usually similar to the letter “m” or to a triangle with oblique angles.
  • The researchers concluded that the significant proximo-distal expansion observed on the medial side of the dorsal recess appeared to be unrelated to the age of the horses. This implies that the expansion of this joint cavity potentially develops independent of the horse’s age.

Research Significance

  • This study provides important insights regarding the growth and development of the distal interphalangeal joint cavity in the pelvic limb of horses.
  • Understanding this development can be instrumental in identifying potential medical conditions related to this joint and devising appropriate treatment plans. Furthermore, it can also assist in enhancing care and maintenance strategies for horses, particularly young ones.
