Osteochondrosis-like lesion of the anconeal process in two horses.
Abstract: A suspected lesion of osteochondrosis dissecans involving the anconeal process of the humeroradial joint (elbow) was found in 2 horses. In horse 1, the lesion was found during routine lameness examination, during which alleviation of the lameness was achieved after intra-articular anesthesia of the elbow. In horse 2, the lesion was found at necropsy. Horse 1 responded satisfactorily to intra-articular treatment with hyaluronic acid. Both horses also had other joints affected with osteochondrosis dissecans.

The study involves discovery and treatment of an osteochondrosis-like lesion in the elbow joint of two horses, with one case identified during a routine lameness examination and another at necropsy. The first horse showed an improvement post intra-articular treatment with hyaluronic acid. Both horses had also been affected with osteochondrosis in other joints.
Lesion Discovery
- This study identified a type of lesion similar to osteochondrosis dissecans situated in the conjoined area of the humerus (the upper forelimb bone) and radius (one of the two-pronged forearm bones), collectively referred to as the elbow joint in two different horses.
- The lesion in the first horse was detected during a standard lameness evaluation. Lameness, in veterinary terms, refers to an inability to move comfortably due to a disorder in the locomotor system. The resolution of the lameness after anesthetizing the elbow joint indicated that the cause was directly associated with the joint.
- In contrast, the second horse had already passed away, and the lesion was identified during the post-mortem investigation, or necropsy.
Treatment and Response
- The first horse underwent treatment involving the injection of hyaluronic acid (a type of lubricant and shock absorber) directly into the affected elbow joint, a procedure known as intra-articular treatment.
- Following the treatment, an improvement was observed in the horse’s condition, suggesting that this form of therapy may be effective in managing such joint disorders in equines.
Associated Conditions
- Furthermore, both the horses were observed to have osteochondrosis dissecans affecting other joints as well.
- Osteochondrosis dissecans is a condition affecting horses where securing cartilage to subchondral bone is hindered, resulting in the flaking away of the joint cartilage (dissecans). This condition is painful and typically affects young horses.
