Overview of Equine Cardiac Disease.

Abstract: Equine heart diseases can be categorized with morphologic, etiologic, and physiologic diagnoses and classified anatomically as diseases of the pericardium, myocardium, valves (endocardium), and great vessels. An appreciation of normal and pathologic physiology is a key to understanding diagnosis and therapy of heart disease. Pathophysiologic diagnoses include arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension. Heart rhythm disturbances can occur in isolation or with structural disease. Heart failure stems from arterial filling owing to insufficient cardiac output. Pulmonary hypertension is associated with strenuous exercise, left heart failure, bronchopulmonary diseases, and pulmonary arteriopathies. The etiopathogenesis of these disorders are incompletely understood.

Plain-Language Overview

The research looks into the different types of heart diseases that affect horses, how they are diagnosed and treated, and the causes of these diseases, which are still not fully known.

Detailed Explanation

Disease Classification

  • The research explains that equine heart diseases can be sorted out according to their form (morphologic), their cause (etiologic), and their functioning (physiologic). This categorization aids in the understanding of the diseases and their treatment.
  • According to their anatomical location, these diseases can also be classified as afflictions of the pericardium (the sac-like covering of the heart) and myocardium (the heart muscle), the heart valves (which are part of the endocardium), or the large vessels that supply blood to and from the heart.

Diagnosis and Therapy

  • Understanding the normal and abnormal functioning of the horse’s heart is crucial to diagnosing and treating heart disease. This appreciation of ‘pathophysiology’ allows for a better diagnosis so that proper therapy can be started.
  • Among the heart diseases that horses can have, the research mentions arrhythmias (abnormalities in the heart’s rhythm — it can beat too fast, too slow or irregularly), congestive heart failure (when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs), and pulmonary hypertension (a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart).

Cause of the Diseases

  • The paper notes that heart rhythm disturbances can occur either on their own or together with a structural disease. Heart failure is reportedly caused by inadequate arterial filling due to insufficient cardiac output.
  • Pulmonary hypertension is said to be linked with strenuous exercise, left heart failure, lung diseases, and abnormalities of the arteries in the lung. However, the paper points out that these causes are not yet fully understood.
