Postsurgical segmental mesenteric ischemic thrombosis in a horse.
Abstract: A 16-year-old, Lusitanian stallion was admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 12-hour history of signs of abdominal pain. Exploratory celiotomy was performed due to an inguinal hernia, and a second celiotomy was performed in response to the abdominal pain. The horse was euthanized and mesenteric venous thrombosis was diagnosed and considered likely due to peritonitis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).

The research article describes a case of a 16-year-old horse that was admitted to a Veterinary Teaching Hospital due to severe abdominal pain caused by an inguinal hernia and mesenteric venous thrombosis, likely due to peritonitis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome.
Case Presentation and Initial Diagnosis
- The subject of this study was a 16-year-old Lusitanian stallion who was admitted to a Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The horse had been exhibiting signs of abdominal pain for the past 12 hours. The initial diagnosis indicated an inguinal hernia, which is a condition where part of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles in the groin area.
- As a response to the abdominal pain, exploratory celiotomy was performed. Celiotomy is a surgical procedure involving opening of the abdominal cavity to examine the internal organs. This surgical intervention provides direct access to examine, diagnose, and treat diseases affecting the abdominal organs.
Subsequent Diagnosis and Treatment
- Upon opening the abdominal cavity, the condition of the horse did not improve, prompting the surgeons to perform a second celiotomy. At this stage, it was discovered that the horse suffered from mesenteric venous thrombosis, a rare and severe condition where a blood clot forms in one of the major veins that drain blood from the intestines.
- This condition was deemed to be most likely a result of peritonitis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Peritonitis is an inflammation of the inner wall of the abdominal cavity, often due to a bacterial or fungal infection. It can lead to potentially life-threatening complications. SIRS, on the other hand, is a severe systemic reaction to a variety of serious injuries or diseases.
- Considering the severe condition, the decision was made to euthanize the horse. Euthanasia in animals is most often recommended when they are suffering from a severe, incurable condition that results in poor quality of life.
