Rhabdomyosarcoma in 8 horses.

Abstract: This multi-institutional report describes 8 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma in horses. Four neoplasms were in the tongue and other areas of the mouth or head, 2 were in the abdominal wall, and 1 each was in right shoulder muscles and heart. Four rhabdomyosarcomas that were less than 10 cm in diameter were treated by surgical excision or radiation with no recurrence. Two neoplasms greater than 10 cm in diameter in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder were considered inoperable and led to decisions to euthanize the horses. Two neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy. All the neoplasms were classified as embryonal except for 1 pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. These 8 cases were evaluated with 9 published case reports of equine rhabdomyosarcoma. For all cases, the most common sites were limb muscles (5/17) and tongue (4/17). Metastasis was reported in 4 of the previously published cases; none was found in this study.

The research talks about the study of eight cases of a type of cancer, rhabdomyosarcoma, found in horses. Different methods of treatment were applied depending upon the size and location of the tumor and were later analyzed for effectiveness.

Case Analysis

  • The research analyzes eight different cases of rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that arises from skeletal muscle, observed in horses.
  • The tumors were localized in various parts of the horses’ bodies such as the tongue, other areas in the mouth or head, the abdominal wall, shoulder muscles, and the heart.

Rhabdomyosarcoma Location & Treatment

  • Out of the eight, four tumors were less than 10 cm in diameter and were located in the tongue or other oral areas and head. These tumors were treated either by surgical excision or radiation and showed no recurrence.
  • In contrast, two tumors, greater than 10 cm in diameter, were located in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder muscles. These cases were considered inoperable, leading to the decision to euthanize the horses for humane reasons.
  • There were two instances where tumors were unexpectedly discovered during necropsy, an autopsy performed on animals.

Tumor Classification

  • Every tumor, except one, was categorized as ’embryonal,’ a subtype of rhabdomyosarcoma. The exception had the ‘pleomorphic’ type of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Data Comparison to Previous Studies

  • The evaluated data from these eight cases were compared with nine other previously published case reports on equine rhabdomyosarcoma.
  • From all cases, it was found that the most common site for the tumors were the limb muscles and the tongue.
  • Importantly, while metastasis was observed in four cases from previous reports, it was not found in any of the cases in this study.
