The basics of farriery as a prelude to therapeutic farriery.
Abstract: Domesticated horses need hoof care, because it is rare for wear and growth of the hooves to be in perfect equilibrium. During the shoeing interval, the hoof grows downwards and forward in the direction of the horn tubules, losing some degree of angle. Few horses have perfect limb conformation. The shape of a hoof of a limb with conformation defects adapts in a predictable way. If, for therapeutic or performance reasons, the hoof-shoe combination is modified, there is a not a lot of leeway in the trim of a particular foot, whereas the applied shoe type, placement, and adjustments provide endless possibilities.

This research suggests that domesticated horses often require hoof care due to the imbalance between the wear and growth of their hooves. The study also proposes that horses with limb conformation defects may require specific adjustments in their hoof-shoe combination for therapeutic or performance benefits.
Understanding Hoof Care in Domesticated Horses
- The study begins by acknowledging the need for hoof care in domesticated horses. This necessity arises because wear and growth of the hooves rarely balance each other. Over time, hoof growth tends to progress downwards and forwards following the direction of the horn tubules, resulting in a loss of the hoof angle.
- It’s also highlighted that an ideal or perfect limb conformation is uncommon in horses. Instead, many horses exhibit certain defects in the conformation of their limbs.
- These defects, though, often influence the shape of a horse’s hoof, causing it to adapt in a particular and foreseeable manner.
Leveraging Therapeutic Farriery
- The study presents the idea of therapeutic farriery, where changes in the hoof-shoe combination can help alleviate certain defects or improve a horse’s performance.
- However, the research also warns of limited room for trimming a specific foot. That means there’s not much flexibility when it comes to adjusting the hoof itself.
- Conversely, the type of shoe used, its placement, and any tweaks made to it offer a plethora of possibilities. That suggests most modifications in therapeutic farriery revolve around the hoof shoe rather than the hoof itself.
Conclusion
- In conclusion, this study provides insight into the necessity of hoof care for domesticated horses and the challenges involved in achieving perfect hoof balance. It points to therapeutic farriery, particularly adjustments in the hoof-shoe combination, as a potentially effective solution.
- The key takeaway is that while direct modifications to the hoof might be challenging due to limited flexibility, various adjustments to the applied shoe can offer endless possibilities for improving a horse’s hoof health and overall performance.
