Unusual presentation of cyathostomiasis in an adult Thoroughbred mare.
Abstract: A recently purchased 16-year-old Thoroughbred mare with a history of recurrent colic and low body weight, also had lameness in 3 limbs, pain at the sacro-iliac joint, and increased corneal opacity of the right eye. Response to supportive therapy was poor and euthanasia was elected. A postmortem examination and histopathology confirmed cyathostomiasis within the large colon and cecum and chronic anterior uveitis of the right eye.

This research article details an atypical presentation of cyathostomiasis (a parasite-borne disease) in a 16-year-old Thoroughbred mare accompanied by recurrent colic, lameness in three limbs, joint pain, and increased visibility to an eye disease called chronic uveitis which resulted in euthanasia due to an unsuccessful response to the supportive therapy. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of the disease in the mare’s large intestine and right eye.
Introduction and Case Background
- The research revolves around a 16-year-old Thoroughbred mare that had recently been purchased. The mare was having recurrent colic, low body weight, and lameness in three of its limbs. Additional symptoms included pain in the sacro-iliac joint and an increased opacity of the cornea in the right eye.
- The mare did not respond well to supportive therapy, and its condition was so severe that euthanasia was elected as the most humane course of action.
Postmortem Examination and Findings
- After euthanasia, a postmortem examination was conducted which paired with histopathology finally confirmed the horse was suffering from cyathostomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic nematodes (small worms) known as Cyathostomins that infect the large intestine of horses. The disease was present within the mare’s large colon and cecum.
- Additionally, the right eye of the mare was diagnosed with chronic anterior uveitis. Uveitis causes inflammation in the middle layer of the eye, and when it is chronic and anterior, it means it is long-lasting and affects the anterior chamber of the eye, in this case resulting in increased corneal opacity.
Conclusion
- This research sheds light on an unusual form of cyathostomiasis in horses, demonstrated in a way not typically seen in Thoroughbreds. The findings suggest further investigation into similar cases for the development of more effective diagnostic methods and treatment options.
