Uterine fibrosarcoma in a Warmblood mare.
Abstract: This paper describes a case of uterine fibrosarcoma in an 18-year-old Warmblood mare. The mare had exhibited bloody fluid accumulation inside the uterus and vaginal haemorrhagic discharge since the previous foaling. The mare was euthanized, and on pathological examination, in addition to the uterine neoplasia, multiple metastases were found in the lungs, liver and spleen. The histological and immunohistochemical examination determined that the tumour was a fibrosarcoma. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to describe a uterine fibrosarcoma in a mare.

This research study discusses the case of an 18-year-old horse, specifically a Warmblood mare, that developed a rare form of uterine cancer known as fibrosarcoma. After the horse exhibited unusual health symptoms, an autopsy revealed the presence of the tumor, marking this as the first recorded instance of such a case in a horse.
Background
- The research was triggered by the discovery of unusual health symptoms in an older Warmblood mare – an equine breed known for its ‘warm’ or hot-blooded temperament. These symptoms, which included the accumulation of bloody fluid in the uterus and vaginal bleeding, prompted further investigations.
Pathological Examination
- Unfortunately, due to the severe condition of the mare, she was euthanized. An autopsy was performed to identify the cause of her ill health.
- Researchers discovered the presence of neoplastic formations in the uterus – abnormal growths that indicate the presence of cancer. This was the first significant finding of the study.
- The autopsy also revealed multiple metastases or secondary tumors in the lungs, liver, and spleen. This showed that the cancer had spread from its initial site, the uterus, to other organs in the body of the mare.
Diagnostic Findings
- The histological evaluation (microscopic examination of the cellular structure of tissues) and immunohistochemical analysis (which identifies cells based on the presence of specific proteins) helped determine the type of cancer.
- The tumor was identified as a fibrosarcoma, a malignant tumor that originates in the fibrous connective tissue. This discovery marked a unique and first-time occurrence of a uterine fibrosarcoma in a mare.
Study Significance
- This research is significant given that fibrosarcoma is not a common tumor in horses, and this is the first time it has been identified in the uterus of a mare.
- The findings of this research enhance understanding of equine health and disease and may be beneficial for future disease diagnosis and treatment in this species.
