[Various indices of microclimate in the newly built and re-adapted stables for race horses].

This research examined the microclimate in 14 stables housing race horses. The study found that current conditions in these stables can be harmful to the health of the horses, due to factors such as temperature, humidity, and insufficient ventilation. Suitable changes were recommended for both existing and new stables, for the betterment of horses’ health and living conditions.

Study Scope

• The researchers surveyed 14 stables managed by 10 different horsemen’s teams and clubs. Among them, five stables were newly built.
• The measurement and examination were performed during the winter period in five race-horse stables housing approximately 16 horses each, where the ideal air temperature was between 10°C and 12°C.
• They evaluated the amount of space per horse, relative air humidity, CO2 concentration, NH3 concentration, and ventilation conditions.

Results

• The average space per horse was 42.9 m³ with a variation of 8.7 m³.
• The relative air humidity was found to be 74.3% with a deviation of 3.8%, CO2 concentration was 0.175% with a variation of 0.027%, and NH3 concentration was 0.00135% with a deviation of 0.00044%.
• The majority of horse stables were found to lack proper ventilation equipment for winter and cold periods.
• The improper microclimate including cold, wet conditions influenced by present construction techniques and excessive space in box-type houses was found to be harmful to the health of the horses.

Recommendations

• The researchers suggested that these issues could be resolved in the existing stables by including additional heating, preferably a hot-air system.
• The study recommended that horse stables should be constructed with good thermal-insulation characteristics including 45 cm thick plastered brick walls and thermally insulated lofts.
• It was also advised that floors should be solid and hard.
• Application of modern construction methods and materials is required to ensure that all parameters are met.
• The research advocates for the importance of considering all factors affecting the microclimate and layout of the racehorse stables.
