Identification

Death camas is a bulb-forming perennial with a grass-like appearance. Plants produce a single erect, unbranched flowering stem surrounded by narrow leaves. Because the leaves emerge early in the growing season and resemble those of grasses or edible camas plants, death camas may be difficult to recognize before flowering. [2][3][4]

 

Depending on the species and growing conditions, plants typically reach 8 to 48 in (20 to 120 cm) in height. Most are considerably shorter in early spring when the leaves first emerge. The stem is upright, smooth, and sparsely leafed. [2]

Excessive vagal stimulation contributes to a slowed heart rate and low blood pressure, along with dilation of peripheral blood vessels.
