Bracken Fern Poisoning in Horses

Bracken fern is one of the most geographically widespread vascular plants on Earth, occurring throughout North America and many other regions.

In horses, the species most commonly associated with bracken fern toxicosis in North America is Pteridium aquilinum. Several regional varieties occur across the United States, including western bracken fern (P. aquilinum var. pubescens) in the western United States and eastern bracken (P. aquilinum var. latiusculum) across much of the eastern half of the country. Other regional forms include lacy bracken in southern Florida and tailed bracken throughout much of the southeastern United States. [1][2]

This adaptable perennial often establishes in dry open woodlands, semi-shaded areas, pasture margins, roadsides, logged areas, burned landscapes, and disturbed soils. It is particularly well-adapted to sandy or gravelly soils with good drainage and can spread aggressively where competition from grasses and other vegetation is limited. [3]

Bracken fern reproduces extensively through underground rhizomes, allowing it to colonize large areas and form dense stands over time. Because these rhizomes can survive cutting, fire, drought, and grazing pressure, bracken fern can persist for many years once established.

Identification

Bracken fern is a deciduous perennial fern that grows from an extensive underground rhizome system composed of dark brown to black woody rhizomes.

These rhizomes grow aggressively beneath the soil, allowing the plant to form large, dense patches along pasture edges, woodland clearings, and disturbed areas.

 

 

Unlike many ferns that emerge from a central crown, bracken produces individual erect fronds that arise separately from the ground.

The fronds are coarse, stiff, and broadly to narrowly triangular in shape, typically reaching approximately 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) in height under most conditions, although larger plants may occur in optimal environments. The fronds are divided into multiple feathery segments, giving the plant its characteristic lacy or fern-like appearance. [2][3][5]

Leaves are pinnately compound, with progressively smaller divisions toward the outer portions of the frond. Ultimate leaf segments, known as pinnules, may appear oblong with lobed lower portions and smoother tips toward the ends of the frond. [2][3][5]

The plant lacks true woody stems above ground. Instead, stiff upright stalks support the large photosynthetic fronds. Mature fronds may appear somewhat leathery and coarse compared to many other fern species. [2][3][5]

Mature bracken fern fronds produce spores on their undersides. These spores form near the edges of the leaf segments, where the curled-under margins help cover and protect them. [2][3][5]

Bracken fern commonly forms extensive patches in open woodland, semi-shaded habitats, pasture margins, clear-cut areas, burned landscapes, and unmanaged grazing environments. It often becomes especially prominent in areas where overgrazing, fire, logging, or drought have reduced competing vegetation. [2][3][5]

Seasonal growth can affect the risk of exposure. Young, tender shoots emerge in spring and may be more appealing to grazing horses. In late summer or during drought, horses may also eat mature fronds if better forage is limited.

Toxicology of Bracken Fern

Bracken fern contains multiple toxic compounds capable of producing several disease syndromes in animals. In horses, the most important toxic effect involves disruption of thiamine leading to progressive neurologic dysfunction.

The primary compound associated with neurologic disease in horses is thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1). Thiamine is essential for normal carbohydrate metabolism and neurologic function. When horses consume bracken fern repeatedly over several weeks to months, thiaminase destroys dietary thiamine, eventually causing deficiency. [4][5]

Because nervous tissue relies heavily on thiamine-dependent energy metabolism, deficiency progressively impairs central nervous system function in horses. The toxic effects are cumulative and typically require prolonged ingestion before clinical signs appear. [1][2][4]

The concentration of toxic compounds within bracken fern varies depending on season, environmental conditions, geographic location, and plant variety. Thiaminase content is generally highest during the summer months. Importantly, toxicity persists even after the plant has withered or dried, meaning contaminated hay remains hazardous. [1][2][4]

Thiamine administration is the cornerstone of treating bracken fern toxicosis. Parenteral thiamine is typically administered initially, often at doses ranging from approximately 0.5 to 1 gram, followed by continued supplementation over the following days or weeks depending on clinical response.
