Direct Fed Microbials (DFMs) refer to live, beneficial microorganisms included in animal feeds to support gastrointestinal health and microbial balance. Common types include species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, and certain yeast strains like Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
DFMs are typically added to feeds or supplements in viable form and are intended to colonize or interact with the gut microbiota. They may support digestive efficiency by promoting beneficial microbial populations, competing with undesirable microbes, and enhancing fiber fermentation—especially relevant in hindgut fermenters like horses
