Distillers Dried Grains

Distiller’s Dried Grains (DDG) are a byproduct of the ethanol and alcohol production process, primarily derived from corn, wheat, or other cereal grains. After the fermentation process in which the majority of the starch is removed from the grain, the remaining grain residue is dried to produce a protein– and fiber-rich feed ingredient commonly used in livestock and equine diets.

In equine nutrition, DDG can serve as an alternative protein and energy source, with moderate levels of digestible fiber. It contains residual yeast and fermentation byproducts, which may support hindgut microbial activity. However, DDG can be highly variable in nutrient content depending on the grain source and processing method. Additionally, its phosphorus content is relatively high compared to calcium, which can lead to an imbalanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio if not properly managed
