Flaxseed (Linseed)

Whole flaxseed, also known as linseed, is the unprocessed seed of the Linum usitatissimum plant, known for its high fat content and rich concentration of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). It also contains dietary fiber and protein.

The hard outer shell of flaxseed provides natural protection against oxidation, allowing for a longer shelf life compared to ground flaxseed. However, this tough seed coat can reduce digestibility unless the seeds are chewed thoroughly or processed before feeding.

In equine diets, flaxseed is often fed to support skin and coat health, promote a balanced omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio, and provide a source of cool energy. While horses can partially digest whole flax seed, grinding or soaking the seeds before feeding improves nutrient absorption.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Flaxseed (Linseed) as an ingredient.
