Selenium Yeast - Feed Ingredient

Selenium yeast is an organic form of selenium produced by fermenting yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in a selenium-enriched medium. During fermentation, the yeast incorporates selenium into amino acids which is the most bioavailable form of selenium for animals. Selenium yeast is commonly used in livestock and equine nutrition to support antioxidant function, immune health, and proper muscle function.

Compared to inorganic sources like sodium selenite, selenium yeast is more efficiently absorbed and retained in tissues, leading to improved selenium status in the body. Selenium yeast is also considered safer than selenium salts, as it has a lower risk of toxicity.

Selenium is an essential trace mineral required for the activity of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that protects cells from oxidative damage. Horses and other animals depend on dietary selenium because they cannot synthesize it internally.

In horses, selenium deficiency can lead to muscle weakness, poor immune response, and white muscle disease in foals. However, excessive selenium intake can be toxic, causing symptoms such as hoof cracking, hair loss, and neurological issues.
