Neuropathogenic and non-neuropathogenic EHV-1 strains induce the accumulation of hyperphosphorylated Tau in primary murine neurons.
Acta virologica    October 29, 2020   Volume 64, Issue 4 490-495 doi: 10.4149/av_2020_407
Cymerys J, Su0142ou0144ska A, Chodkowski M, Golke A, Krzyu017cowska M, Bau0144bura MW.Equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) causes respiratory disease, abortion and neurological disorders in horses. Similarly, to other alphaherpesviruses, EHV-1 is neurotropic and establishes latency in the neurons of its natural host. Despite the fact that many studies have been devoted to the pathogenesis of various clinical forms of EHV-1 infection, mechanisms of the neuronal damage are still not fully understood. The aim of this study was to define the phosphorylation status of tau protein in neuronal cell culture infected with EHV-1. Phosphorylation of tau was tested at tau-ser199/ser202, tau-ser404,...
Tick-borne encephalitis in domestic animals.
Acta virologica    June 20, 2020   Volume 64, Issue 2 226-232 doi: 10.4149/av_2020_212
Salat J, Ruzek D.Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a disease caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), represents a serious neural infection of humans in Europe and Asia. The main reservoir hosts of TBEV are ticks, rodents and insectivores, but domestic animals may also be infected with the virus. This review summarizes what is known about TBE in domestic species (e.g., dogs, horses), in which infection may manifest with clinical signs similar to those seen in severe human cases. We also focus on TBE in ruminants where TBE infections are typically asymptomatic and do not cause health problems in the infecte...
Avian influenza A virus adaptation to the equine host and identification of host-specific markers.
Acta virologica    August 31, 2018   Volume 62, Issue 3 266-276 doi: 10.4149/av_2018_220
Mucha V, Hollu00fd J, Vareu010dkovu00e1 E, Kostolansku00fd F.Avian influenza A viruses (IAVs) are able to overcome the interspecies barrier and adapt to the new non-avian host. The process of adaptation requires the adaptive changes of IAV genome resulting in amino acid substitutions. The aim of this work was the description of amino acid substitutions in avian influenza A viruses (IAVs) occurring during their adaptation to equine host. Today, viruses of the equine influenza H3N8 subtype, first isolated in 1963, represent a single genetic lineage of IAV causing a respiratory disease in horses. We compared the amino acid sequences of the conserve...
Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii among domestic ruminants and horses in Poland.
Acta virologica    September 1, 2017   Volume 61, Issue 3 369-371 doi: 10.4149/av_2017_318
Szymau0144ska-Czerwiu0144ska M, Jodeu0142ko A, Pluta M, Kowalik S, Niemczuk K.Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. The cases of the disease are recorded in various species, including domestic animals. The aim of this investigation was to estimate the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in ruminants including cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Totally, 2082 serum samples from 936 goats, 933 cattle, 89 sheep, and 124 horses, including various horse breeds, were tested by ELISA or complement fixation test. The examination revealed that Polish horses are seronegative while in the populations of cattle and small ruminants, seropositive animals are presented. The per...
Equine herpes virus 2 infection in horse populations in Poland.
Acta virologica    December 15, 2004   Volume 48, Issue 3 189-192
Ruszczyk A, Cywinska A, Banbura MW.The prevalence of Equine herpesvirus 2 (EHV-2) infections in the horse populations in Poland was investigated. Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) of 139 horses were tested. The animals were divided into four groups: clinically healthy horses, horses suffering from respiratory disorders, mares with a recent abortion and horses with diagnosed ataxia. Thirty-four virus isolates were obtained from leukocytes of the tested animals by cocultivation with equine dermal cells and were identified as EHV-2 by PCR using primers for the gB gene of EHV-2 and/or primers for the sequence located upstream of t...
Rapid and sensitive detection of equine arteritis virus in semen and tissue samples by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, dot blot hybridisation and nested polymerase chain reaction.
Acta virologica    June 8, 1999   Volume 42, Issue 5 333-339
Starick E.A reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay using four different primer pairs for the detection of equine arteritis virus (EAV) RNA in semen and tissue samples was evaluated. A fragment encoding the leader sequence of the EAV genome was most successfully amplified. The specificity and sensitivity of RT-PCR was assessed by virus isolation in cell culture, restriction analysis, dot blot hybridisation and nested PCR. To this end, 23 semen samples from seropositive stallions and 11 tissue samples from 4 aborted foals were tested. Compared to the virus isolation test in cell cu...
Characterization of A/eq-1 virus isolated during the equine influenza epidemic in India.
Acta virologica    February 1, 1994   Volume 38, Issue 1 25-26
Singh G.The equine influenza virus, Ludhiana/5/87, isolated from the clinical material during the epidemic of equine influenza in India in 1987 was inhibited in haemagglutination-inhibition test by the antiserum against the prototype A/eq/Prague/1/56 (H7N7) virus and by post-epidemic horse sera. In haemagglutinin and neuraminidase analysis, the A/eq/Ludhiana/5/87 isolate appeared similar to the prototype A/eq/Prague/1/56 virus and was characterized as the H7N7 subtype.
Aetiologic study on an influenza-like epidemic in horses in China.
Acta virologica    April 1, 1991   Volume 35, Issue 2 190-195
Guo YJ, Wang M, Zheng SL, Wang P, Ji WJ, Chen QH.About thirty thousands horses were affected and hundreds of them died in an epidemic caused by equine 2 influenza virus (H3N8) in China. The estimated morbidity and mortality accounted for 81% and 2%, respectively. The viral protein and RNA electrophoresis patterns revealed that the new isolates were antigenically different from the prototype strain influenza A/eq/Miami/1/63(H3N8). Therefore, the representative strain of the equine 2 subtype of influenza A virus recommended for producing reference reagents, vaccines, and for serological diagnosis must have been altered by antigenic drift.
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measurement of antibodies against equine herpesvirus 2 in equine sera.
Acta virologica    November 1, 1987   Volume 31, Issue 6 468-474
Fu ZF, Denby L, Lien DH, Robinson AJ.An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of antibodies against equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2) in equine sera. The optimal conditions of antigen concentration, and serum and conjugate dilutions were established by chequerboard titrations. When the standard ELISA test was used for titration of test sera, it was found to give titres approximately 1500 times higher than those obtained in the virus neutralization (VN) test, and a correlation coefficient of 0.815 was obtained between these two tests on 42 equine sera. All the positive serum samples by ...
Persistence in nature of influenza virus A/eq/Praha/56 (Heq1Neq1).
Acta virologica    January 1, 1980   Volume 24, Issue 1 63-67
Tåmová B, Stumpa A, Zakopal J, Vĕzníková D, Mensík J.Equine influenza occurred in Czechoslovakia 14 years after the last epizootic in horses that had returned from abroad. Six strains A (Heq1Neq1) antigenically related to, but not identical with, strain A/eq/Praha/56 were isolated from 10 washings. Seroconversion was demonstrated with paired sera, but the antibody increase was more marked against the newly isolated strain.
Rates of infection in, and transmission of, African horse-sickness virus by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
Acta virologica    July 1, 1978   Volume 22, Issue 4 329-332
Braverman Y, Boorman J.Very low infection rates (less than 3%) were obtained when Aedes aegypti mosquitoes ingested blood contained 5.8--6.5 log10 MLD50/0.02 ml African horse sickness virus (AHSV). When A. aegypti mosquitoes were inoculated intrathoracically with virus, however, high infection rates were achieved. Mosquitoes infected by inoculum failed to transmit virus to embryonated hens eggs by bite, and virus could not be detected in membrane or blood when inoculated mosquitoes were allowed to engorge on uninfected blood through a chick skin membrane. It was concluded that the mosquito A. aegypti is unlikely to ...
