Accelerometer-based system for the detection of lameness in horses. Video-based kinematic analysis of gait in horses is accurate for quantification of lameness and reliable for identification of the affected limb. Algorithms for the measurement of the vertical head and pelvic displacement and phase correlation with vertical displacement of one forelimb and hindlimb foot have been developed for this purpose. A curve-fitting technique for evaluating head movement to measure forelimb lameness in horses. Evaluation of the asymmetry of vertical head movement is used during kinematic evaluation of forelimb lameness in horses. For mild lameness, absolute translational measurements are not sensitive enough to detect small differences in the asymmetry of vertical head movement. Also, conscious movement of the head by the horse, not associated with lameness, interferes with accurate measurement. Heart rate variability in the horse by ambulatory monitoring. Using a microprocessor controlled Ambulatory Monitoring System (AMS) developed by one of us (LvD), we have been studying the changes in and control of heart rate in the resting horse. The system provides us with InterBeat Intervals (IBI in milliseconds), motion sensing, and a time domain measure (mean successive differences: MSD) of heart rate variability for periods up to 72 hours. Mechanisms of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in the equine athlete. This article discusses exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), a pathophysiological syndrome which occurs worldwide in the equine athlete. It reviews the history of EIPH, the incidence in performance horses, the etiology, studies performed on the treadmill to determine the mechanisms of EIPH, and the most likely causes of stress failure of the pulmonary capillaries.
Mathematical modelling of post-exercise heart rate recovery in ponies. Using a recently developed nonlinear algorithm which identifies reference points on left ventricular pressure waveforms and other waveforms, we analyzed heart rate recovery in ponies after strenuous treadmill exercise. Each pony performed exercise tests with and without premedication with atropine methyl nitrate. Resting and exercise heart rates were 54 +/- 3 and 209 +/- 6 beats/min, respectively, without premedication and 85 +/- 8 and 212 +/- 5 beats/min, respectively, following atropine premedication. Digital signal analysis of cardiac events in horses and ponies. We have developed a digital signal analysis technique which can be used to evaluate various cardiac events in ponies and horses at rest and during exercise. The algorithm is designed to identify R-wave peaks on the surface electrocardiogram, consistent reference points on the left ventricular pressure waveform and the initiation of the QRS complex on the epicardial electrogram. Portable data acquisition cart for equine transportation stress study. A remote data sampling cart has been designed and built for studying environmental factors that produce stress in horses during transportation. This dedicated sampling cart uses an XT-compatible mother board powered by a 12 V battery, with customized BIOS and ROM program. Sampling is performed using two digital and eight A/D (bipolar, differential) channels in burst mode at a frequency of 1 kHz. Digital processing of equine exercise electrocardiograms. We have developed and used a system for recording and analyzing the electrocardiogram (ECG) of the horse during exercise. The system consists of a commercial ECG transmitter telemetering a Z lead (base-apex) ECG from an exercising horse. The received data are then remodulated at an audio frequency and stored on a audio cassette recorder. Exercise protocols of up to 10 minutes are digitized using a Macintosh II computer.
