Variation of an epitope of keratan sulphate and total glycosaminoglycans in normal equine joints. An epitope of keratan sulphate (KS) and total glycosaminoglycans (GAG) were measured in synovial fluid samples from joints of 53 horses immediately following humane destruction. Internal examination of the joints post mortem ensured that there was no gross evidence of osteoarthritis or other joint disease. The role of computed tomography in evaluation of subchondral osseous lesions in seven horses with chronic synovitis. Seven horses with severe, persistent lameness of sudden onset were evaluated with scintigraphy and/or computed tomography. The lameness was localised to the front fetlock joint in 2 horses and to the tibiotarsal joint in 5 horses. Five of the horses had a history of intra-articular injections of the involved joint prior to presentation. All horses had effusion of the affected joint and were positive to flexion tests. Linear assessment of the thoroughbred horse: an approach to conformation evaluation. A linear assessment trait evaluation system is proposed to allow quantitative description of the static conformation of the horse. Measurements were made on 27 selected traits. The system was tested initially for repeatability of measurements on 4 horses. Twenty-one of the selected traits were satisfactory and 6 proved unsatisfactory in terms of reproducibility. A population of 101, superior 2- and 3-year-old Thoroughbreds and 19 premium Thoroughbred stallions were similarly assessed. Evaluation of pulse oximetry in anaesthetised foals using multiple combinations of transducer type and transducer attachment site. A commercially available pulse oximeter was evaluated in anaesthetised foals to determine its accuracy for estimating arterial haemoglobin saturation (SaO2). Pharmacokinetics of ceftriaxone in healthy horses. Five healthy Equidae (4 horses and one pony) were given a single i.v. dose of ceftriaxone (50 mg/kg bwt) to determine the pharmacokinetics and concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Blood was drawn from an i.v. jugular catheter and CSF from a pre-placed, intrathecal catheter. Serum and CSF concentrations were determined by high performance liquid chromatography. Stress associated with road transport is believed to be a significant contributor to the pathogenesis of post transport respiratory disease in horses. Equine herpesvirus type 2: prevalence and seroepidemiology in foals. Whole blood and serum were collected from foals to determine the prevalence of Equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV 2) infection in foals, age at which infection can first be identified and serological responses to infection. Anatomy of the ocular arteries in the horse. Orbital and intrabulbar arteries were studied in 20 equine eyes by means of latex injections and methylmethacrylate casts. The orbital branches of the external ophthalmic artery arise far caudal to the posterior pole of the eyeball and present a variable topographic arrangement. Factors associated with gastric lesions in thoroughbred racehorses. Gastroscopic examinations were performed on 67 Thoroughbred horses in training at a race track and repeat examinations performed in 35 horses, 2 to 3 months later. Horses were age 2-9 years and included 16 two-year-olds, 32 three-year-olds and 19 horses > or = 4-years-old. Forty-two of the 67 horses had raced within the 2 months before the initial examination and the remaining 25 horses were in training. Endotoxin induced expression of tumour necrosis factor, tissue factor and plasminogen activator inhibitor activity by peritoneal macrophages. Daily fluctuations of haematology and blood biochemistry in horses fed varying levels of protein. Changes in the plasma biochemistry of 12 stallions were studied over seven 24 h periods. Use of a virulence-associated protein based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Rhodococcus equi serology in horses. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed against Rhodococcus equi using Triton X-114 detergent extracted whole cell material, in which the virulence associated protein (VapA) predominated. Enzymelinked immunosorbent assay titres corresponded to antibody reacting with VapA on Western blots. Prerace venous blood acid-base values in standardbred horses. The administration of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) or 'milk shakes' to Standardbred horses before racing is widespread. This study analysed nonrace day (CTL) and prerace venous acid-base values from Standardbred horses racing in Pennsylvania (PA) and New Jersey (NJ). Mean +/- s.d.
