The foramen ovale of the foetal and neonatal foal.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 255-260 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01517.x
MacDonald AA, Fowden AL, Silver M, Ousey J, Rossdale PD.Hearts from 24 foals were studied; 10 were from foetuses ranging in gestational age from 230 to 322 days and 14 were from newborn and young foals aged between birth and 17 days. The foramen ovale and associated vena caval and atrial structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Additional observations were made by light and transmission electron microscopy. A tube-like flap of tissue was observed, extending from the aperture in the caudal vena cava to the lumen of the left atrium. In the younger foetuses, the distal end of this tube was covered with a thread-like network of tissue....
A morphological study on the obliteration processes of the ductus arteriosus in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 249-254 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01516.x
Machida N, Yasuda J, Too K, Kudo N.The obliteration processes of the ductus arteriosus of equine foetuses and newborn foals were studied morphometrically and histologically. The length, internal and external diameters and circumference of the ductus in equine foetuses increased progressively and linearly up to 310 days with advancing foetal age, but the values, especially the internal diameter, decreased from 320 to 330 days. After birth, the ductal measurements decreased gradually and ductal closure was found in three of 14 foals examined on the first day post partum, in two of six on the second day and in nine of nine on the ...
Amyloid in the horse: a report of nine cases.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 277-285 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01524.x
van Andel AC, Gruys E, Kroneman J, Veerkamp J.Out of approximately 16,000 horses referred for clinical examination, nine had amyloidosis. Six of these horses had localised amyloid deposits in the wall of the nasal meatus and ventral turbinates associated with epistaxis. Horse 1 also developed malignant histiolymphocytic lymphosarcomas. The amyloid deposits were potassium permanganate-resistant and tryptophan-positive. Gel filtration of solubilised amyloid fibrils from Horse 1 revealed a major retarded fraction with an apparent molecular weight of 20 kD. This protein had an amino acid composition similar to human AL-amyloid proteins and ho...
Use of iohexol for myelography in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 286-290 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01525.x
Maclean AA, Jeffcott LB, Lavelle RB, Friend SC.The use of iohexol as a contrast agent for myelography is reported in two groups of horses. Group 1 (n = 6) were used only for myelography and to assess the clinical and pathological effects of intrathecal administration of iohexol. A volume of 20 ml at a concentration of 300 or 350 mg iodine/ml gave satisfactory myelographic detail with no serious clinical or neurological side effects. Only a minimal inflammatory response could be demonstrated in cerebrospinal fluid at four and 14 days after injection. At post mortem examination 14 days after myelography there was no evidence of meningitis no...
A morphometric study of foetal and newborn cardiac growth in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 261-267 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01519.x
Machida N, Yasuda J, Too K.A morphometric study of hearts in 81 equine foetuses, ranging in age from 190 to 330 days of foetal age, and in 26 newborn foals is reported. The mean weight, external dimensions, ventricular wall thickness and circumference of the atrio-ventricular orifice were measured. Features of the main associated vessels of the heart were also recorded. All cardiac measurements of foetuses increased linearly throughout the latter half of pregnancy and were highly correlated with foetal age. This linear growth pattern was also found in the parameters of the associated arterial trunks. The ratio of the ri...
Effect of exercise on the partitioning of equine respiratory resistance.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 4 268-273 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01521.x
Art T, Serteyn D, Lekeux P.Pleural, tracheal, pharyngeal and mask pressures as well as airflow and tidal volume of five ponies on a treadmill (incline 8.3 degrees) were recorded simultaneously while resting, walking, trotting slowly, trotting fast, after standing for 30 secs and 5 mins after the end of the exercise. The curves obtained were used to calculate total pulmonary resistance (RL), lower airway resistance (RLA) and upper airway resistance (RUA). The latter was also divided into nasal resistance (Rnas) and laryngeal plus extrathoracic tracheal resistance (Retr + lar). Furthermore, the inspiratory and expiratory ...

Detection of neurectomy by testing skin sensitivity using an electrical stimulus.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 194-198 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01498.x
Moorman GH, van Noort JH, Németh F, Breukink HJ, Gootjes P, Verzijlenberg F.A method for detection of neurectomy by electrical stimulation of the skin, distal to the neurectomy site, was tested for accuracy and feasibility. An electrical stimulation device was designed and tested to find the minimum peak voltage that would elicit a response in normal horses. Twenty seven horses were then tested at regular intervals following neurectomy and their responses recorded. Immediately following neurectomy there was an area of insensitivity with sharply defined borders extending in an arc from the back of the pastern down towards the bulbs of the heels. In the months following...

Ruptured inguinal hernia in new-born colt foals: a review of 14 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 178-181 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01492.x
van der Velden MA.Over a six year period, 14 new-born colt foals were treated surgically because of ruptured inguinal hernia. In all cases, the prolapsed intestines, which were jejunal loops, were situated subcutaneously and protruded through a rent in the parietal vaginal tunic at the level of the inguinal canal. After herniorrhaphy and unilateral castration, the prolapsed loops were replaced into the abdomen, and the superficial inguinal ring closed. Seven foals survived.

Effects of xylazine and acepromazine on bronchomotor tone of anaesthetised ponies.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 185-188 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01496.x
Watney GC, Hall LW, Jordan C, Nolan AM.The effects of xylazine (an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist) and acepromazine (an alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist) on bronchomotor tone were investigated in seven anaesthetised, apnoeic ponies using a computer aided forced oscillation technique, which separates changes in bronchial calibre from changes in lung volume. Both agents produced bronchodilatation and a decrease in lung volume.
Surgical treatment of acquired inguinal hernia in the horse: a review of 51 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 173-177 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01491.x
van der Velden MA.During a seven year period, 51 cases of acquired inguinal herniation in 50 stallions were treated surgically. In 25 cases the herniated loop was ileal, in the other 26 it was jejunal. In cases of strangulation, the vaginal ring was enlarged by incising the peritoneum and transverse fascia. Closure of the superficial inguinal ring was advisable to prevent the hernia recurring. In all cases unilateral castration was performed. Laparotomy was carried out in 33 cases; 22 required intestinal resection and in four cases a bypass was made. Follow-up at least six months postoperatively indicated that ...
External balance of water and electrolytes in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 189-193 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01497.x
Groenendyk S, English PB, Abetz I.The components of the daily external water and electrolyte balances of five normal Standardbred geldings with a mean body weight of 427 kg, were determined over 14 day periods. The mean value of daily total water intake (a summation of free, combined and metabolic water intake) for the group was 27.6 litres, that is, 64.4 ml/kg body weight, while mean values for ambient temperature and humidity ranged from 16 to 25 degrees C and 55.4 to 75.5 per cent, respectively. The mean daily urine volume of 9.9 litres (23.2 ml/kg) for the group, was found to exceed the mean faecal water output of 7.2 litr...
Body temperature and behaviour of mares during the last two weeks of pregnancy.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 199-202 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01499.x
Shaw EB, Houpt KA, Holmes DF.Average daily core body temperature and behavioural patterns of pregnant mares were studied, in search of definitive signs of parturition within 24 h of the event. Nineteen pony mares were sampled twice daily for core body temperature. A significant temperature drop, averaging 0.1 degrees C (0.2 degrees F) was observed during the day prior to parturition. Between 18.00 h and 06.00 h, during the two weeks before parturition, Thoroughbred and Standardbred mares (n = 52) spent an average 66.8 per cent of their time standing, 27.0 per cent eating, 4.9 per cent lying in sternal recumbency, 1.0 per ...

Increased local IgA production in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 214-216 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01502.x
Mair TS, Stokes CR, Bourne FJ.The immunoglobulin (Ig) content of serum and tracheal lavage fluid was measured in 50 horses suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 40 control horses. The mean immunoglobulin: albumin ratios of the lavage fluids of both groups were significantly higher than the corresponding values for serum, which indicates significant local production of immunoglobulins in the lower respiratory tract. The IgA: albumin ratio of lavage fluid was significantly higher in diseased compared with normal horses, which implies increased local production of IgA in this disease. The IgG: albumi...
Quantification of skin displacement near the carpal, tarsal and fetlock joints of the walking horse.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 203-208 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01500.x
van Weeren PR, van den Bogert AJ, Barneveld A.A technique enabling simultaneous visualisation of skin and underlying bony structures in the walking horse was used to quantify skin displacements on the lateral surface of carpal, tarsal and fetlock joints. The technique employed implanted light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) for marking the bone, and self adhesive spot labels for marking the overlying skin. Photographic recordings were made. Skin displacement was measured in six Dutch Warmblood horses. Mean total displacements and mean displacement per degree of change of joint angle were calculated. Displacements at the level of the fetlock joints...
Dietary requirements and athletic performance of horses.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 163-172 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01490.x
Frape DL.There is no clear evidence that the chronic requirement for any non-energy yielding nutrient rises in proportion as the energy requirement increases with hard work. The need for protein, and probably that for calcium, remain a function of bodyweight daily. Some proportionality with energy may exist for certain nutrients, although the evidence has not been adduced. For example, because of an increase in both the proportion and amount of propionic acid in the volatile fatty acids of caecal contents, the tissue requirement for vitamin B12 may rise with an increase in the rate of energy metabolism...
Distribution of ground reaction forces of the concurrently loaded limbs of the Dutch Warmblood horse at the normal walk.
Equine veterinary journal    May 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 3 209-213 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01501.x
Merkens HW, Schamhardt HC.The distribution of the ground reaction forces (GRF) over the concurrently loaded limbs of the normally walking horse was determined from 'representative' GRF patterns of all limbs, which were plotted in correct time order after analysis of simultaneously taken high-speed film. This procedure visualises the GRF patterns of each of the four limbs in relation to the GRF pattern(s) of the one or two concurrently loaded limb(s) during a complete stride. In 15 clinically sound horses the mean averaged GRF data and temporal stride parameters showed an almost complete symmetry between both the foreli...

Molluscum contagiosum in a horse.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 2 143-145 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01481.x
Moens Y, Kombe AH.An adult stallion presented with a severe papular dermatitis of especially the neck, chest and genitalia. A marked scrotal oedema was present. Histopathological examination of skin biopsies, revealed the presence of numerous intracytoplasmic molluscum bodies in areas of focal epidermal hyperplasia. Electron microscopical examination showed the presence of typical pox virions in affected epidermal cells. Attempts at viral isolation were unsuccessful. This is believed to be the first reported case of molluscum contagiosum in a horse in the Republic of South Africa.
Dose related effects of the kappa agonist U-50, 488H on behaviour, nociception and autonomic response in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 2 114-118 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01471.x
Kamerling S, Weckman T, Donahoe J, Tobin T.Current opiate receptor theory suggests that kappa agonists should provide good analgesia without producing marked central nervous system stimulation. U-50,488H is an experimental narcotic analgesic that is a selective kappa agonist. In the present study, U-50,488H produced good analgesia in horses using both the skin twitch and hoof withdrawal reflex assays. Further, the analgesia was relatively long lasting (120 mins) compared to other mu-agonists tested in horses. The locomotor response to U-50,488H was less than observed with ethylketazocine and butorphanol, and has yielded the smallest lo...
A 64XX/65XXX mosaic mare (Equus caballus) and associated infertility.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 2 128-130 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01475.x
Gill JJ, Kempski HM, Hallows BJ, Warren AM.IT is well known that chromosomal abnormalities are frequently associated with infertility in the mare (Table 1). The most commonly reported abnormality is 6 3 x 0 which can occur in a mosaic or non-mosaic form. Various other aneuploidies of the sex chromosomes have been reported but the 6SXXX genotype appears to be rare. Chandley et a1 (1975) and Chandley (1984) have reported two 65XXX animals and Walker (1979) a 64XW6SXXW6SXXY one. This paper reports a mosaic 64XXh5XXX animal and emphasises the need for more cytogenetic analysis in the horse.
