Extrapyramidal side effects caused by fluphenazine decanoate in a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 8 1128-1130
Kauffman VG, Soma L, Divers TJ, Perkons SZ.To provide long-term sedation, a horse was given fluphenazine decanoate, a human antipsychotic drug. The horse was progressively agitated and made unusual repetitive motions. Sedation with barbiturates was an effective treatment. This case is not unusual, and the use of fluphenazine by veterinarians in horses as a mild long-acting tranquilizer is not uncommon.
Surgical treatment of septic pedal osteitis in horses: nine cases (1980-1987).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 8 1131-1134
Gaughan EM, Rendano VT, Ducharme NG.Over an 8-year period, 9 horses with septic pedal osteitis were admitted to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine. Septic pedal osteitis was defined by the presence of purulent exudate combined with radiographic evidence of lysis of the distal phalanx. The condition described involved only the distal phalanx, the laminae and hoofwall, and the soft tissues of the sole. Treatment included curettage and removal of the affected portion of the distal phalanx through a ventral approach to the foot, combined with systemic administration of antibodies. Of the 9 horses, 7 returned to soundn...

Endoscopic appearance of gastric lesions in foals: 94 cases (1987-1988).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 8 1135-1141
Murray MJ.Of 183 foals examined by use of gastroendoscopy during 1987 and 1988, 94 had gastric lesions. Sixty-eight of 120 foals in the 1- to 85-day-old age range had endoscopically confirmed gastric lesions, and 26 of 63 foals in the 90- to 310-day-old age range had gastric lesions. Lesions were observed most frequently in the stratified squamous mucosal epithelium, particularly adjacent to the margo plicatus. Lesions were observed in the gastric glandular mucosa in 26 of the 94 foals with gastric lesions, and with a greater frequency in foals with a clinical disorder than in foals with no disorder (27...
Blood pressure response to tourniquet use in anesthetized horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 8 1097-1103
Copland VS, Hildebrand SV, Hill T, Wong P, Brock N.Blood pressure during anesthesia and surgery was compared for 2 groups of horses. Group A, consisting of 23 horses, had a tourniquet placed on the distal portion of a limb. The other group of 20 horses (group B) had surgery of comparable nature and duration as did group-A horses, but a tourniquet was not used. There was a statistical difference (P less than 0.05) in the peak systolic arterial blood pressure between the groups; group-A horses had a mean (+/- SEM) peak of 151 +/- 6 mm of Hg and group-B horses had a peak of 118 +/- 4 mm of Hg. In addition, group-A horses had immediate decrease in...
Transcervical embryo transfer in performance mares.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 7 940-944
Sertich PL.Pregnancy was established by transcervical transfer of embryos from performance mares into recipient mares. Estrus was synchronized between donor (n = 17) and recipient (n = 43) mares. After a greater than or equal to 25-mm follicle was detected, donor mares were bred artificially daily until ovulation. Day of ovulation was recorded. Uterine flushes (n = 111) were performed on donor mares 7 days after ovulation, and recovered embryos were transferred transcervically to recipient mares within 2 hours. Embryos were recovered from 40.5% of uterine flushes. Of transferred single embryos, 65.7% res...

Internal fixation of comminuted transverse scapular fracture in a foal.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 6 781-783
Bukowiecki CF, van Ee RT, Schneiter HL.A comminuted scapular fracture in a foal was treated surgically by use of 2 dynamic compression plates. The plates were applied upside down, so that the convex surface of the plate faced the bone. At 5 months after surgery, the plates were removed, and the foal recovered without complications.
Malignant seminoma in a cryptorchid stallion.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 6 775-776
Smith BL, Morton LD, Watkins JP, Taylor TS, Storts RW.A 16-year-old cryptorchid Quarter House with colic had a large, lobulated soft-tissue mass to the left of the pelvic inlet. At surgery, 2 large multilobulated pedunculated masses were removed. A large blood vessel enveloped by one of the masses was damaged, and the horse exsanguinated. Postmortem examination of the abdomen revealed the masses to be malignant seminoma, with multiple sites of metastasis.
Strangulating volvulus of the ascending colon in horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 6 757-764
Snyder JR, Pascoe JR, Olander HJ, Spier SJ, Meagher DM, Bleifer DR.Of 57 horses with strangulating volvulus of the ascending colon, 42 were mares (including 21 postparturient mares), 8 were stallions, and 7 were geldings. Volvulus occurred most frequently in the summer (n = 24) and spring (n = 17). Pain was evaluated as severe in 41 horses, moderate in 9, and mild in 4. The abdominal fluid from 30 horses varied from clear yellow in 19 horses, to cloudy yellow in 3 horses, and serosanguineous in 8 horses. Protein content and nucleated cell count in the abdominal fluid were 2.5 +/- 1 g/dl and 1,000 +/- 900 microliters, respectively. Fifty horses had greater tha...
Subchondral lucency of the third carpal bone in Standardbred racehorses: 13 cases (1982-1988).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 6 789-794
Ross MW, Richardson DW, Beroza GA.Thirteen Standardbreds had subchondral lucency of the third carpal bone (C3), described as single or multiple central areas of C3 bone loss in the radial fossa. Sclerosis of the radial fossa was also detected. The mean age of 9 stallions, 3 mares, and 1 gelding was 4.1 years (range, 3 to 7 years). All horses had an acute moderate to severe lameness referable to the middle carpal joint. A dorsoproximal dorsodistal (skyline) radiographic projection was most useful and identified mild (3 horses), moderate (6 horses), and severe (4 horses) subchondral lucency and sclerosis of the radial fossa. The...
Dorsal subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint in the pelvic limb of three horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 6 777-780
Shiroma JT, Engel HN, Wagner PC, Watrous BJ.In horses, dorsal subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint in the pelvic limb, which realigned when weight was applied to the limb, improved following surgery. Improvement was observed, if not immediately, at least within two weeks after treatment. The severity and duration of the condition appear to be important considerations in predicting the time necessary for resolution of the condition following surgery. Treatment consisted of surgical resection of a small segment of the medial head of the deep digital flexor tendon in the pelvic limb. The section removed was positioned distal t...
Use of videoendoscopy during exercise for determination of appropriate surgical treatment of laryngeal hemiplegia in a colt.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 5 619-622
Stick JA, Derksen FJ.Videoendoscopy of the larynx during treadmill exercise was used to determine the surgical treatment of upper airway obstruction in a Standardbred colt. Surgical correction of right-sided laryngeal hemiplegia, first by laryngoplasty, then subtotal arytenoidectomy, was ineffective. Videoendoscopy indicated, and upper airway flow mechanics confirmed, that the laryngeal opening was adequate at rest, but obstruction occurred during exercise. On the basis of the appearance of the larynx during high airflow rates on slow-motion playback of the videorecording, total arytenoidectomy was performed, whic...

Pseudallescheria boydii keratomycosis in a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 5 616-618
Friedman DS, Schoster JV, Pickett JP, Dubielzig RR, Czuprynski C, Knoll JS, Wolfgram LJ.The fungal organism Pseudallescheria boydii was isolated from the cornea of a Quarter Horse with ulcerative keratitis. Despite aggressive hourly medication through a subpalpebral lavage system, with drugs including miconazole and natamycin, the cornea developed a stromal abscess. Orbital exenteration was performed after 3 weeks. The fungal isolate was later determined to be resistant to all 8 antifungal drugs tested. Microscopic examination of the cornea revealed fungal hyphae throughout the corneal stroma and penetrating the Descemet membrane. Pseudallescheria boydii has not been implicated p...
Factors affecting incisional complication rates associated with colic surgery in horses: 78 cases (1983-1985).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 5 639-642
Kobluk CN, Ducharme NG, Lumsden JH, Pascoe PJ, Livesey MA, Hurtig M, Horney FD, Arighi M.From May 1, 1983 to April 1, 1985, 142 operations were performed on horses with signs of acute abdominal pain (colic), using a ventral midline incision. Seventy-eight horses lived for at least 15 days after surgery or had acute dehiscence and were included in the study. Seventy horses had surgery once, and 8 horses had surgery 2 or more times. Six-month follow-up evaluation was obtained for 66 horses that had 1 surgery and for 6 horses that had multiple surgeries. Incisional complications included drainage (including infection), acute dehiscence, hernia, and suture sinus formation. The effects...

Lateral luxation of the superficial digital flexor tendon from the calcaneal tuber in two horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 4 495-498
Meagher DM, Aldrete AV.Lateral luxation of the superficial digital flexor tendon from the calcaneal tuber occurs in horses as a result of tearing or rupture of the medial retinaculum of the tendon. This report describes the repair of this condition in 2 Thoroughbred race horses, using a surgical technique in which 2 cancellous bone screws were placed in the calcaneus lateral to the tendon, along with suturing the medial retinaculum.
Evaluation of heparin for prophylaxis of equine laminitis: 71 cases (1980-1986).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 4 505-507
Belknap JK, Moore JN.The records of 71 horses with small intestinal disorders requiring surgical correction were disorders requiring surgical correction were reviewed to compare the prevalence of laminitis in those horses treated prophylactically with heparin and the prevalence of horses not treated with heparin. The prevalence of laminitis was 13% (9/71), and there was no significant difference (P less than 0.05) in the prevalence of laminitis between the 2 groups. The lack of significant benefit after treatment with heparin indicates that further work needs to be done on the equine coagulation system before hepa...
Percutaneous nephrostomy in short-term management of ureterolithiasis and renal dysfunction in a filly.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 4 499-501
Byars TD, Simpson JS, Divers TJ, Shiner KA, Rantanen NW.Percutaneous nephrostomy was used to provide urine output in a 3-year-old Thoroughbred filly with azotemia and obstructive ureterolithiasis. Previous left ureteral surgery had failed to provide clinical improvement, and the filly became more azotemic. Nephrostomy was performed in the standing patient, with ultrasonographic guidance and local anesthesia. Continuing IV fluid therapy and diuresis through the nephrostomy tube resulted in a decrease in clinical signs of azotemia. However, the filly developed a cecal impaction, which ruptured during surgery because of colic, and was euthanatized.

Black walnut toxicosis in ten horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 3 343-344
Uhlinger C.Black walnut toxicosis was diagnosed in 10 horses at one stable. The time from exposure to shavings to development of clinical signs was 8 to 12 hours. Most common clinical signs were moderate to severe laminitis (Obel grade 2 or 3), pitting edema of the distal portion of the limbs, and rapid respiratory rate. Two horses had clinical signs of colic and 2 other horses had anorexia and lethargy. All 10 horses recovered without complications.
Serratia marcescens septicemia associated with infusion of an amino acid solution in two horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 3 340-342
Young DR, Divers TJ, Benson CE.Clinical septicemia developed in 2 clinically normal horses after both were administered a portion of an amino acid solution IV. Serratia marcescens was subsequently isolated from blood of both horses. The isolates were shown to be identical on the basis of antibiograms and plasmid biochemistry, incriminating the infusate as the source of bacterial infection. The horses recovered after supportive and antimicrobial treatment.
Thoracic neoplasia in equids: 35 cases (1967-1987).
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    August 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 3 374-377
Sweeney CR, Gillette DM.Thirty-two horses and 3 ponies had neoplasia involving the thoracic cavity. Lymphosarcoma of the thorax was found in 19 (54.2%) of the equids. The other 16 equids had metastatic adenocarcinoma (7 horses; 20%), metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (5 equids; 14.3%), metastatic hemangiosarcoma (3 equids; 8.6%) or undifferentiated sarcoma (1 horse; 2.9%). Thoracic neoplasia was diagnosed before death in 15 equids (42.9%).
Clinical use of the neuromuscular blocking agents atracurium and pancuronium for equine anesthesia.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 15, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 2 212-219
Hildebrand SV, Holland M, Copland VS, Daunt D, Brock N.Neuromuscular blocking agents (muscle relaxants) are useful and common adjuncts to general anesthesia for human beings, but have not been used extensively during anesthesia of large animal species. Over a 3-year period, atracurium or pancuronium were used as adjuncts to general anesthesia for 89 anesthetic procedures in 88 equids (of 18 breeds and age ranging in age from 5 weeks to 25 years) at the teaching hospital. Forty-one of the anesthetic procedures were for abdominal surgery, and orthopedic (n = 19), ophthalmologic (n = 17), thoracotomy (n = 1), and soft tissue (n = 14) procedures compo...
Hypertrophic osteopathy in a pony with a pituitary adenoma.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 1 103-105
Sweeney CR, Stebbins KE, Schelling CG, Beech J, Schilling DA.Hypertrophic osteopathy was diagnosed in a pony that had no antemortem or postmortem evidence of an intrathoracic lesion. With a history of hirsutism in an aged pony, a pituitary adenoma was suspected, and evaluation of plasma cortisol and insulin values and their response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone supported the diagnosis.

Clinical, ultrasonographic, and surgical findings in foals with umbilical remnant infections.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    July 1, 1989   Volume 195, Issue 1 69-72
Reef VB, Collatos C, Spencer PA, Orsini JA, Sepesy LM.Infection of umbilical arteries, umbilical vein, and/or urachus was diagnosed ultrasonographically in 33 foals 1 to 90 days old (mean, 17.7 +/- 17.3 days). In these foals, the most common initial problems were umbilical abnormalities, septic arthritis, and/or neonatal septicemia. In 16 foals, abnormalities of the external umbilical stalk were noticed on admission. Abnormalities of the internal umbilical structures were identified when enlargement and echogenic material (fluid and/or gas) were imaged ultrasonographically within these structures. Multiple structures were affected in 23 foals, wi...
