Pulmonary vascular pressures of exercising thoroughbred horses with and without endoscopic evidence of EIPH. Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a common occurrence in racehorses. Furosemide reduces accumulated oxygen deficit in horses during brief intense exertion. Pulmonary blood flow distribution in standing horses is not dominated by gravity. Recent studies using microspheres in dogs, pigs and goats have demonstrated considerable heterogeneity of pulmonary perfusion within isogravitational planes. Effect of three different warm-up regimens on heat balance and oxygen consumption of thoroughbred horses. Horses were exercised at 105% of their maximal O2 uptake until fatigued after three different warm-up regimens (no warm-up, a light warm-up, and a warm-up until the central venous temperature was > 39.5 degrees C) to assess the effect of the warm-up on the various avenues of heat loss. Joint pressure influences synovial tissue blood flow as determined by colored microspheres. We measured regional blood flow in synovial tissue of the antebrachiocarpal, midcarpal, and metacarpophalangeal joints of six normal adult anesthetized horses by using 15-microns-diameter polystyrene colored microspheres. Selective brain cooling in the horse during exercise and environmental heat stress. Five horses were exercised on a treadmill [to central blood temperature (Tcore) approximately 42.5 degrees C]. Three of those horses were heated at rest in a climate room (53 degrees C, 90% relative humidity) (to Tcore approximately 41.5 degrees C). Characterization of a density-corrected ultrasonic pneumotachometer for horses. Oxygen consumption (VO2) and concentration of venous blood metabolites were measured in donkeys trained to run and to pull loads on a treadmill. Adaptation and overtraining in horses subjected to increasing training loads. To evaluate markers for overtraining, seven male race horses were subjected to 272 days of training consisting of daily exercise bouts of either endurance running (heart rate 140/min) or interval training (maximal heart rate), both increasing in duration and intensity.
