Transferability of cephalothin to the alveolar cavity in thoroughbreds. Five Thoroughbreds were classified into 4 groups according to the administration method used for saline solution (saline), ambroxol, and cephalothin sodium (cephalothin). In group A, cephalothin was injected intravenously after oral administration of ambroxol. In group B, cephalothin was injected intravenously after oral administration of saline. The effect of motilin on the regulation mechanism of intestinal motility in conscious horses. Laparotomy was performed on seven thoroughbreds to attach a force transducer to the proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, and ileum, as well as to the serous membrane of the cecum. Following observation of intestinal motility in conscious horses, they were intravenously injected with motilin (0.6 microgram/kg) to examine its effect on intestinal motility. Strong contractions peculiar to horses were observed in small intestine. Further, motilin caused strong contractions in the proximal jejunum. The results suggested the involvement of motilin in the regulation mechanism of intestinal motility.
Cardiovascular and metabolic adaptations in horses competing in cross-country events. The cardiovascular and metabolic response to two cross-country events (CC*: preliminary level and CC*** advanced level) were analysed in 8 male eventing horses (4 Anglo-Hunter and 4 Anglo-Arabian). Evaluation of equine infectious anemia virus core proteins produced in a baculovirus expression system in agar gel immunodiffusion test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) core proteins (Gag and p26) obtained from a baculovirus expression system were used in agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antigens to test seventy-six horse sera. Those sera showed false-positive reaction in AGID test using Nisseiken antigen. However, none of them showed false-positive reaction with both of the expressed antigens. Diagnosis and sero-epizootiology of equine herpesvirus type 1 and type 4 infections in Japan using a type-specific ELISA. Recently, a type-specific ELISA using equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) and type 4 (EHV-4) glycoprotein Gs (gGs) was developed by Crabb and Studdert [1993]. Pathogenesis of Babesia caballi infection in experimental horses. The present study was designed to investigate the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of Babesia caballi in experimentally infected horses. The expression of cytokine mRNA was determined by using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in two B. caballi-infected horses for 2 weeks after the infection. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for serological survey of equine arteritis virus in racehorses. To examine antibodies against equine arteritis virus (EAV), an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using purified virus antigen was developed. The results of ELISA were compared with those of serum neutralization (SN) tests. The ELISA absorbance values and the SN titers in sera collected weekly from EAV-infected horses showed a similar pattern. Scanning electron microscopic study of the vascular supply of the equine hoof. The blood supply in the equine hoof was studied by a microvascular casting corrosion technique and scanning electron microscopy in combination with observations of sections of the decalcificated digit. The dermal lamella was observed at the hoof wall and the dermal papilla at the other parts of the hoof. The microvascular architecture of the dermal lamella differed from that of dermal papilla. Characteristics of respiratory function during swimming exercise in thoroughbreds. Equine respiratory patterns during swimming were examined in five normal horses. The experiment included a preliminary warming-up stage and 6 circuits of swimming around an annular pool of a 50-meter-circumference. Relationship between plasma testosterone concentrations and age, breeding season and harem size in Misaki feral horses. Jugular vein blood samples were collected from 23 young and sexual mature feral stallions to examine the relationship between plasma testosterone concentration and age, breeding season or harem size. Testosterone concentration increased with the age of the stallions until they formed their own harems, at about 4 to 6 years old. C-cell adenoma containing variously sized thyroid follicles in a horse. A thyroid gland tumor, showing unusual histology, was identified in a 13-year-old male Andalusian horse. Nucleotide sequences of glycoprotein I and E genes of equine herpesvirus type 4. The nucleotide sequences of the glycoprotein I (gI) and E (gE) genes of equine herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4) strain TH20 were determined. The predicted region encoding the EHV-4 gI gene is 1,263 nucleotides, corresponding to a polypeptide of 420 amino acids in length. The predicted region encoding the EHV-4 gE gene is 1,647 nucleotides, corresponding to a polypeptide of 548 amino acids in length. Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability in a horse with atrial fibrillation. This study has demonstrated the power spectral analysis of heart rate variability in a horse with atrial fibrillation. A large peak in the high frequency (HF) area of the power spectrum appeared in the horse. Hourly heart rate, the low frequency (LF) power, the HF power, and LF/HF ratio were almost constant during the recording period. Genetic variation of envelope gp90 gene of equine infectious anemia virus isolated from an experimentally infected horse. Six strains of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) were recovered from febrile and non-febrile stages of a horse experimentally infected with the P337-V70 strain given once to a horse. Genetic analysis of equine methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to determine genetic relationships among 15 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from mares with metritis and from a stallion with dermatitis in Hokkaido. Measurement of erythrocyte volumes in splenectomized horses and sham-operated horses at rest and during maximal exercise. Erythrocyte volumes of thoroughbred horses were measured. The volumes of splenectomized horses and sham-operated horses 2 hr after injection of 50Cr-tagged erythrocytes (at rest) and during maximal exercise were measured using the non-radioactive isotope 50Cr. Because splenic erythrocytes are released into circulation during exercise, it was estimated that the erythrocyte volumes of the sham-operated horses during maximal exercise are larger than those of the horses at rest. Survival of mycoplasmas inoculated in horse sera. Although it is known that commercialized bovine serum is sometimes contaminated with mycoplasmas, it is not clear whether mycoplasmas can survive in horse serum. Equine synovial villi: distinctive structural organization of vasculature and novel nerve endings. The structural arrangement and cellular distribution of endothelial and lining cells of the synovial villi were studied in the equine palmar/plantar recess of the metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal joints by light microscopy and electron microscopy.
