Milne EM, Pemberton AD, McGorum BC, Dixon PM, Scudamore CL, Miller HR.The concentration of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor (API) was measured in the pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while they had clinical signs and while they had none. The concentrations of total protein, albumin and API were significantly higher in the PELF of animals with clinical signs of COPD. The correlation between albumin and API in the PELF suggested that most of the API was derived from the serum.

Hayes A, Swan AJ, Dieppe PA.Crystal deposits have been observed in equine articular cartilage and identified by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction as octacalcium phosphate and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate. Of 89 equine fetlock joints examined 10 contained evidence of calcification visible by eye. It is suggested that the deposition of crystals may be a mediator of arthritis in horses and may also cause damage directly.

McGorum BC, Dixon PM, Halliwell RE, Irving P.The urea and albumen dilution techniques for standardising the variable concentrations of pulmonary epithelial lining fluid (PELF) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples were evaluated in horses. Both techniques proved satisfactory and were of equal accuracy. Albumen adjusted BALF cell counts were significantly higher than PELF cell counts. BALF from normal horses contained, on average, 0.4 per cent PELF (range 0.1 to 1.0 per cent), as determined by the urea dilution technique.
