Serum protein changes in grass sickness.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1983   Volume 35, Issue 2 165-170
Johnson P, Dawson AM, Mould DL.Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to compare serum taken from ponies before and during clinical illness confirmed as grass sickness. A consistent rise in the level of haptoglobin was seen in serum from animals which had shown symptoms for more than two days. Serum albumin was also shown to have altered mobility at the onset of clinical disease. Estimation of the haemoglobin-binding capacity confirmed the haptoglobin increase. This haptoglobin has been purified and some of its properties determined. In contrast to the situation in acute inflammatory conditions no other acute-phase pro...
Effect of cardiac arrhythmia on left ventricular and aortic blood pressure parameters in the horse.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1983   Volume 35, Issue 2 190-199
Miller PJ, Holmes JR.Transaortic blood pressures were recorded in seven horses using catheter mounted transducers during various types of supraventricular arrhythmia. Changes in left ventricular (LV) and aortic (Ao) pulse contours were associated with variation in pulse interval (PI). When PI lengthened there was a rise in LV end diastolic pressure (LVEDP) associated with a prolonged filling time. In contrast, a long PI resulted in a reduced end diastolic Ao pressure (AoEDP) due to a prolonged arterial 'run off'. LVdP/dt max representing the peak rate of rise of pressure during the isovolumic contraction period wa...
Measurement of superoxide dismutase, diamine oxidase and caeruloplasmin oxidase in the blood of thoroughbreds.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1983   Volume 35, Issue 2 160-164
Smith P, Stubley D, Blackmore DJ.Methods were developed for the measurement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), diamine oxidase (DAO) and caeruloplasmin oxidase in the blood of thoroughbred horses. These enzymes were measured in 178 normal thoroughbreds stabled throughout the United Kingdom. The relationships between the activities of SOD, DAO and caeruloplasmin oxidase and the blood concentrations of their associated trace metals (copper, zinc and manganese) were studied in 52 of the thoroughbreds. Trace metals were measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry. No relationships were found between the activities ...
Serum albumin values from healthy cattle, sheep and horses determined by the immediate bromocresol green reaction and by agarose gel electrophoresis.
Research in veterinary science    July 1, 1983   Volume 35, Issue 1 58-60
Keay G, Doxey DL.Serum albumin concentrations were measured by the immediate reacting bromocresol green (BCG) method and by agarose gel electrophoresis in healthy cattle, sheep and horses. No statistically significant differences were found between the values obtained by the two methods. The immediate reacting BCG method is quicker and cheaper when used under the conditions described.
Serovar identification of leptospires of the Australis serogroup isolated from free-living and domestic species in the United Kingdom.
Research in veterinary science    July 1, 1983   Volume 35, Issue 1 64-68
Hathaway SC, Little TW, Stevens AE, Ellis WA, Morgan J.Eighteen isolates from the Australis serogroup from free-living and domestic animals were identified using the cross agglutination absorption test. Serovar muenchen was found only in England and Wales in wood mice, short tailed and bank voles, a grey squirrel and a pig. Serovar bratislava was found in hedgehogs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and also in a brown rat from Northern Ireland. Serovar bratislava was isolated from sheep in both England and Northern Ireland and from horses in Northern Ireland. The distribution of these serovars in relation to possible maintenance hosts is disc...
An in vitro study on joint fitting and cartilage thickness in the radiocarpal joint of foals.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 3 320-326
Firth EC, Hartman W.The change in the degree of fitting of the opposing articular cartilage surfaces of the radiocarpal joint of foals was studied in vitro using a pneumatic loading device. The thickness of the articular cartilage of the distal radius was examined using radiographic and histological techniques. The thickest cartilage corresponded with the approximate centre of the contact area of the opposing articular surface. The variations in articular cartilage contact area and thickness are discussed.
Effect of spasmolytic analgesic drugs on the motility patterns of the equine small intestine.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 3 334-339
Davies JV, Gerring EL.The effect of acepromazine, Buscopan (Crown Chemicals), pethidine and methadone was evaluated in ponies prepared with Thiry-Vella (T-V) loops. Motility was assessed by electrophysiological means (bipolar electrodes and strain gauge transducers) and by the passage through the T-V loop of a fluid test meal. Results were obtained from 26 experiments in three ponies and compared with six control experiments, in which saline had been administered to the same ponies. Each pony acted as its own control in each experiment and pre and post treatment values for slow wave frequency, spiking activity, del...
Electromechanical activity of the equine small intestine and its correlation with transit of fluid through Thiry-Vella loops.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 3 327-333
Davies JV, Gerring EL.Motility patterns in the equine small intestine were investigated in eight ponies. Muscular activity was assessed by means of extramural strain gauge transducers, bi-polar electrodes and in three of the animals, fitted with Thiry-Vella loops, the transit of fluid. Circular muscle contractions were preceded by spiking superimposed on the slow wave and fluid transit in the loops correlated with both these events.
Microangiographic studies of metaphyseal vessels in young foals.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 2 231-235
Firth EC, Poulos PW.Selective perfusion and microangiographic examination of the radius and metacarpus of 30 foals were performed. Vessels of extraosseous origin supplying the peripheral part of the metaphysis were not demonstrated in young foals, but became more obvious in older animals. The development of this vessel system coincided with the reduction of transphyseal vessels from the epiphysis crossing the growth plate.
Effect of intranasal oxygen administration on arterial blood gas and acid base parameters in spontaneously delivered, term induced and induced premature foals.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 2 159-162
Rose RJ, Hodgson DR, Leadon DP, Rossdale PD.The effect of intranasal administration of oxygen at a flow rate of 10 litres per minute for 10 minutes, was studied in a total of 19 foals (thoroughbred and pony) aged between 0.5 and 12 hours. Arterial blood samples were collected before and after oxygen administration for the determination of paO2, paCO2, pHa and base excess. The foals were divided into three groups: five spontaneously delivered thoroughbred and pony foals (group 1), seven term induced thoroughbred foals (group 2) and seven induced premature pony foals (group 3). To examine the effect of duration of oxygen administration on...
Experimental Brucella abortus infection in the horse: observations during the three months following inoculation.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1982   Volume 33, Issue 3 351-359
MacMillan AP, Baskerville A, Hambleton P, Corbel MJ.Five mares, one stallion and a colt foal were inoculated intraconjunctivally with Brucella abortus strain 544. No clinical signs of disease developed except mild pyrexia. Intermittent bacteraemia was detected in the mares but not in the stallion or foal. Antibodies to B abortus became detectable from the second week after inoculation. Titres in the serum agglutination and complement fixation tests declined substantially after six to eight weeks but reactions to the Coombs antiglobulin, 2-mercaptoethanol and immunodiffusion tests were maintained. No consistent changes in biochemical or haematol...
Lysosomal hydrolase activity in leucocytes from cattle, sheep, goats, horses and pigs.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1982   Volume 33, Issue 3 275-279
Healy PJ.Activities of lysosomal hydrolases were measured in the leucocytes of cattle, sheep, goats, horses and pigs. There was high activity of arylsulphatase in leucocytes from cattle, high activities of alpha-fucosidase and beta-glucuronidase in leucocytes from horses and high activity of acid phosphatase in granulocytes from pigs. Within species, arylsulphatase and beta-galactosidase activities were higher in granulocytes than in mononuclear cells, but beta-glucuronidase, phosphodiesterase and alpha-galactosidase activities were higher in mononuclear cells than in granulocytes. Eosinophils of cattl...

Changes in certain metabolic parameters in horses associated with food deprivation and endurance exercise.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1982   Volume 32, Issue 2 198-202
Rose RJ, Sampson D.Total and individual non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), pyruvate, lactate, alpha ketoglutarate, acetoacetate, beta hydroxybutyrate, glucose and insulin were measured in horses during an 80 km endurance ride and during four days of food deprivation. In the latter group venous blood-gas and acid-base parameters, and plasma cortisol concentrations were also measured. During exercise and food deprivation the NEFA became considerably elevated, the predominant of which were oleic (35 per cent), palmitic (24 per cent), linoleic (19 per cent) and linolenic (10 per cent). By one hour after feeding tota...
Effect of repeated biopsy sampling on endometrial concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin following intramuscular injection in pony mares.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1981   Volume 31, Issue 3 281-283
Allen WE, Ayliffe TR.Endometrial concentrations of sodium benzylpenicillin were determined in biopsy samples from anoestrous pony mares after intramuscular administration of the penicillin at 22,000 iu/kg. Serum samples, collected at the same time as biopsies, were also assayed for their penicillin content. In experiment 1 a single pair of blood and tissue samples was taken from each mare between five and 360 minutes after injection. In experiment 2 each mare was sampled consecutively six times (between five and 300 minutes) after injection. Both serum and endometrial concentration reached a peak between 15 and 30...
Natural infection with Dictyocaulus arnfieldi in pony and donkey foals.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1981   Volume 31, Issue 3 278-280
Clayton HM, Duncan JL.From June to October 1978 four pony mares and foals and two donkey mares and foals grazed a paddock contaminated with Dictyocaulus arnfieldi larvae. No signs of respiratory disease were seen in the foals but within 11 weeks of exposure to the paddock all six developed patent lungworm infections. In October 1978 one donkey and two pony foals were killed. At post mortem examination parasites in various stages of development and measuring up to 8 cm in length were found in the lungs. At this time the three surviving foals were stabled for the remainder of the experiment. Two of these ceased passi...
Distribution of 5′-nucleotidase and gamma glutamyl transferase activities in the tissues of the horse.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1981   Volume 31, Issue 3 312-314
Ford EJ, Adam SE.In the horse, 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT) activity is found mainly in homogenates of lung, kidney, small intestine, mammary gland, liver and pancreas. Lower activities are present in brain and muscle. Activity can be demonstrated histochemically in the glomeruli and tubules of the kidney, in the sinusoidal borders of the hepatocytes and the bile duct epithelium as well as in the blood vessels of all organs. There is no significant difference between the 5'-NT activity in serum and plasma of normal horses and of horses suffering from a range of orthopaedic conditions. Previous findings that gamma g...
Effect of total calorific deprivation on host defence in the horse.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1981   Volume 31, Issue 3 369-372
Naylor JM, Kenyon SJ.Horses were deprived of food but not water for a period of five days. There was a progressive decrease in circulating lymphocyte count and compromised host deference. In vitro phagocytosis of yeast fell from a mean of 97 per cent in fed horses to 78 per cent in horses deprived of food for five days. The Arthus response to intradermal challenge with allergens fell to 57 per cent of fed values. These changes indicated that food deprivation increases the susceptibility to bacterial infections; persistent anorexia in chronic bacterial infections may limit the horse's ability to cast off infection....
Clinicopathological aspects of imidocarb dipropionate toxicity in horses.
Research in veterinary science    July 1, 1981   Volume 31, Issue 1 54-61
Adams LG.Six groups of four adult horses were twice injected intramuscularly at a 24 hour interval with 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 mg/kg of imidocarb dipropionate (IMDP) and monitored for 21 days. The LD50 of IMDP for 21 days after injection was two doses of 15.99 +/- 1.49 mg/kg with mortalities occurring within six days following the first injection. Increasing levels of IMDP were correlated with increasing rates of morbidity, mortality, local and systemic reactions, increasing levels of blood urea nitrogen, serum aspartate amino transferase, serum sorbitol dehydrogenase, serum creatine phosphokinase, neutr...

Effect of exogenous hyaluronic acid on joint function in experimentally induced equine osteoarthritis: dosage titration studies.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1981   Volume 30, Issue 2 192-197
Gingerich DA, Auer JA, Fackelman GE.A single intra-articular injection of 20 or 40 mg of purified hyaluronic acid of rooster comb origin resulted in restoration of normal joint function in horses with experimentally induced osteoarthritis. The functional improvement, measured by pressure sensitive force plate techniques, was detectable within one week after treatment and persisted throughout a four week experimental period despite continued use of the joints. The response was dose dependent in that injection of 0 (saline), 5 or 10 mg hyaluronic acid per joint space resulted in no significant change in joint function while dosage...
Regional pulmonary perfusion in horses: a comparison between anaesthetised and conscious standing animals.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1981   Volume 30, Issue 1 44-48
Staddon GE, Weaver BM.The regional perfusion to the lungs of 14 ponies was studied using radioactively labelled microspheres injected intravenously. It was found that within half an hour of induction of anaesthesia the perfusion to the dependent lung had decreased significantly from the values in the standing animal. When anaesthesia was maintained for more than two and a half hours, however, the lung perfusions were not significantly different from the standing values when the animals were lying in lateral or supine recumbency.
Attempted induction of an avian eosinophilia using various agents.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1980   Volume 29, Issue 3 293-297
Maxwell MH.A series of experiments is described in which attempts were made to produce an avian eosinophilia using various agents. Although none of the experiments was decisive, two demonstrated a slight rise in the eosinophil counts. In one experiment horse serum was injected into a group of fowls on alternate days for 42 days. No eosinophils were seen in any blood smears after this treatment. After a rest period of eight days the birds received further injections for 10 days. The mean eosinophil count rose to over 4 per cent with a range of 1 to 11 per cent. It is considered that this type of response ...
An epidemic of Getah virus infection among racehorses: isolation of the virus.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1980   Volume 29, Issue 2 157-161
Sentsui H, Kono Y.During the autumn of 1978 a disease characterised by fever and occasionally by exanthema and/or oedema of the limbs was seen in approximately 13 per cent of horses in a training stable in the Kanto district of Japan. A virus was isolated by the intracerebral inoculation of one-day-old mice from blood and nasal swabs taken from naturally and experimentally infected horses. The virus was subsequently passaged in two monkey kidney cell lines in which it produced complete cytopathic changes. Infected horses developed neutralising, complement fixing and haemagglutinin inhibiting antibodies to the v...
An epidemic of Getah virus infection among racehorses: properties of the virus.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1980   Volume 29, Issue 2 162-167
Kono Y, Sentsui H, Ito Y.A virus (Sakai) which had been recovered from an outbreak of disease in horses was found to be a small spherical enveloped RNA virus with a diameter of approximately 70 nm and a buoyant density of 1.22 g per ml. It grew well and produced a cytopathic effect in a variety of cell cultures; it was sensitive to organic solvents, heat and low pH. It agglutinated goose erythrocytes in a 0.35 M sodium chloride solution at an optimum pH of 6.2 and was antigenically identical or closely related to Getah virus, a member of the alphavirus subgroup of the Togaviridae.
Cell morphology and collagen types in equine tendon scar.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1980   Volume 28, Issue 3 302-310
Williams IF, Heaton A, McCullagh KG.The histological appearance of cells and tissues in the reparative scar tissue which forms in the equine superficial flexor tendon following partial rupture was compared to that of normal tendon. The repair fibroblasts were found to be larger and more basophilic than the tenocytes of normal tendon, to have large vesicular nuclei and to resemble the 'myofibroblasts' described in scar tissue elsewhere. The cell to matrix ratio in scarred zones of tendon was found to be increased and the concentration of collagen in these areas was less than in normal tendon. However, the scar tissue collagen was...
Changes in blood gas, acid-base and metabolic parameters in horses during three-day event competition.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1980   Volume 28, Issue 3 393-395
Rose RJ, Ilkiw JE, Sampson D, Backhouse JW.Sixteen horses competing in a three-day event had venous blood samples collected during the speed and endurance test (day 2) to examine changes in blood gas ands acid-base balance, and the concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, alpha-ketoglutarate and cortisol. Following the roads and tracks and steeplechase phases there was a significant metabolic and respiratory alkalosis despite a rise in lactate. After completion of the cross country section, although there was a significant decrease in total base, there was no significant change in pH from pre-event value...
Observations on vaccine and post-infection immunity in contagious equine metritis.
Research in veterinary science    May 1, 1980   Volume 28, Issue 3 362-367
Fernie DS, Batty I, Walker PD, Platt H, Mackintosh ME, Simpson DJ.The vaccination of four ponies on two occasions with a formolised culture of Haemophilus equigenitalis produced a high circulating antibody titre to the organism in each pony. Three out of four vaccinated and all of three unvaccinated ponies developed typical symptoms of contagious equine metritis (CEM) when subsequently challenged with a vaginal exudate containing H equigenitalis. Similarly, three ponies which had previously been infected with H equigenitalis and which had recovered spontaneously also developed contagious equine metritis when rechallenged with the organism. The clinical and b...
Muscle fibre type composition of a number of limb muscles in different types of horse.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1980   Volume 28, Issue 2 137-144
Snow DH, Guy PS.Skeletal muscle of the equine was differentiated into three fibre types according to myosin ATPase (pH 9.4) and succinic dehydrogenase activity. The percentage of these types was determined in the musculus deltoideus, m triceps brachii caput longum, m gluteus medius, m semitendinosis, m biceps femoris and m vastus lateralis of the thoroughbred, Shetland pony, pony, heavy hunter and donkey. In addition the m gluteus medius was examined in the arab and American racing quarterhorse. High myosin ATPase activity fibres varied from a mean of 93.2 per cent in the m gluteus medius of the quarterhorse ...
