Equine endometrial biopsy reviewed: observation, interpretation, and application of histopathologic data.
Theriogenology    February 26, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 9 1567-1581 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.12.013
Snider TA, Sepoy C, Holyoak GR.The equine endometrial biopsy, an important tool in equine reproduction science, has experienced a rich period of increasing knowledge, development, and application over the past 40 y. Much of the foundational work in this field was conducted by Dr. Robert M. Kenney. In view of his recent passing, this review is dedicated to our alumnus, Dr. Robert M. Kenney (OSU, 1954). In this manuscript, we pay tribute to Kenney-eponymous for the equine endometrial biopsy grading system-by reviewing the procedure. We present this review in three parts: 1) how observational data are acquired; 2) how these da...
Infection of embryos following insemination of donor mares with equine arteritis virus infective semen.
Theriogenology    February 22, 2011   Volume 76, Issue 1 47-60 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2011.01.017
Broaddus CC, Balasuriya UB, Timoney PJ, White JL, Makloski C, Torrisi K, Payton M, Holyoak GR.The objective was to evaluate the potential risks associated with embryo transfer from mares bred with equine arteritis virus (EAV) infective semen. Twenty-six mares were embryo donors, whereas 18 unvaccinated and EAV antibody seronegative mares were embryo recipients. Of the 26 donor mares, 15 were unvaccinated and seronegative for antibodies to EAV and 11 were vaccinated for the first time with a commercially available modified live virus vaccine against EVA before breeding and subsequent embryo transfer. All donor mares were bred with EAV-infective semen from a stallion persistently infecte...
Effects of timing of induced luteolysis in embryo donor mares on reproductive performance and pregnancy rate in recipient mares.
Theriogenology    February 4, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 6 1170-1174 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.12.008
Goretti RG, Araújo RR, Filho AN, Araújo GH, Lopes EP, Guimarães JD.The objective was to evaluate the effects of giving prostaglandin F₂(α) (PGF) to donor mares 48 h prior to embryo collection. Non-lactating donor mares (n = 20 estrous cycles in 10 mares), ranging from 2.5 to 10 y of age and 400 to 500 kg of body weight were used from September 2004 to February 2005 in the southern hemisphere (Brazil). Donor mares were randomly assigned in a cross-over design study. During a Treated cycle, 7.5 mg PGF was given 48 h prior to embryo collection, whereas in the Control cycle, 7.5 mg PGF was given at embryo collection. In Treated Cycles, serum progesterone conce...
Effect of dietary antioxidant supplementation on fresh semen quality in stallion.
Theriogenology    February 4, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 7 1319-1326 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.12.003
Contri A, De Amicis I, Molinari A, Faustini M, Gramenzi A, Robbe D, Carluccio A.In this study, the effect of dietary supplementation of organic selenium, vitamin E, and zinc on raw semen characteristics was evaluated. Ten stallions with normal fertility were divided into two groups: a control group (CG), in which standard diet was provided, and a treated group (TG), in which the standard diet was supplemented with 1500 mg of α-tocopherol acetate, 360 mg of zinc, and 2.5 mg of organic selenium on a daily basis. Semen parameters on fresh semen were evaluated three times in all stallions before antioxidant supplementation (T0) and 30 (T1), 60 (T2), and 90 (T3) d after suppl...
Supplementation of equine early spring transitional follicles with luteinizing hormone stimulates follicle growth but does not restore steroidogenic activity.
Theriogenology    February 4, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 6 1076-1084 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.11.016
Schauer SN, Briant C, Ottogalli M, Decourt C, Handel IG, Donadeu FX.This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that supplementation of growing follicles with LH during the early spring transitional period would promote the development of steroidogenically active, dominant follicles with the ability to respond to an ovulatory dose of hCG. Mares during early transition were randomly assigned to receive a subovulatory dose of equine LH (in the form of a purified equine pituitary fraction) or saline (transitional control; n = 7 mares per group) following ablation of all follicles >15 mm. Treatments were administered intravenously every 12 h from the day th...
Agreement between measures of total motility and membrane integrity in stallion sperm.
Theriogenology    February 4, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 8 1499-1505 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.12.011
Foster ML, Varner DD, Hinrichs K, Teague S, Lacaze K, Blanchard TL, Love CC.Increasing seminal plasma concentrations in extended stallion semen were utilized to model decreasing sperm motility over time. Level of agreement was determined between flow cytometric measurement of sperm membrane integrity, using a combination of SYBR-14 and propidium iodide, and computer-assisted analysis of sperm motility. Values for total sperm motility (TMOT;%) and membrane integrity (SMI;%) were similar (∼80%) at Time 0 within all sperm treatments. However, TMOT was lower than SMI after 24 and 48 h of storage in treatments with >20% seminal plasma. At Time 0, agreement (bias and a...
Effect of sod (superoxide dismutase) protein supplementation in semen extenders on motility, viability, acrosome status and ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase) protein phosphorylation of chilled stallion spermatozoa.
Theriogenology    February 4, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 7 1201-1210 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.11.031
Cocchia N, Pasolini MP, Mancini R, Petrazzuolo O, Cristofaro I, Rosapane I, Sica A, Tortora G, Lorizio R, Paraggio G, Mancini A.New studies are underway to find new methods for supporting longer storage of cooled stallion semen. It is known that high concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause sperm pathology. The metalloprotein superoxide dismutase (SOD) is responsible for H(2)O(2) and O(2) production, by dismutation of superoxide radicals. The aim of this study is to assess the quality of chilled stallion semen processed with extenders containing SOD at different concentrations as antioxidant additives. A total of 80 ejaculates collected from 5 standardbred stallions was divided into 5 aliquots treated as: ...
Comparison of three diagnostic methods to identify subclinical endometritis in mares.
Theriogenology    January 19, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 7 1311-1318 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.12.002
Overbeck W, Witte TS, Heuwieser W.The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of a uterine swab (US), a cytological brush (CB) and an endometrial biopsy (EB) to detect subclinical endometritis in mares. Cytological and bacteriological results of all three techniques were related to histological occurrence of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in the stratum compactum, commonly known as 'best standard'; to diagnose endometritis. Samples were taken from 55 mares of different breeds without clinical signs of endometritis. Samples for US, CB and EB were collected, smeared on a microscopic slide and cultured for bacte...
Dynamics of activities of matrix metalloproteinases-9 and -2, and the tissue inhibitors of MMPs in fetal fluid compartments during gestation and at parturition in the mare.
Theriogenology    January 8, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 6 1130-1138 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.11.023
Oddsdóttir C, Riley SC, Leask R, Shaw DJ, Aurich C, Palm F, Fowden AL, Ricketts SW, Watson ED.During late gestation in the mare, rapid fetal growth is accompanied by considerable placental growth and further invasion of the endometrium by microvilli. This growth requires extensive remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In early pregnancy, we know that matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 and -2 are involved in the endometrial invasion during endometrial cup formation. The present study investigated whether MMPs are found in fetal fluids later in gestation and during parturition, and if there was a difference in their activities between normal and preterm delivery. Amniotic fluids we...
Longitudinal study of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system in purebred Spanish broodmares during pregnancy.
Theriogenology    January 8, 2011   Volume 75, Issue 7 1185-1194 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.11.029
Satué K, Domingo R.During pregnancy, the coordinated interaction of the components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a vital role in accommodating the cardiovascular, haemodynamic and haematological needs imposed by foetal development and the placenta. This significantly influences the birth weight of the neonate and foetal viability. Although the evolution of each of the components of this system has been widely described in various species, it has not yet been clarified in the mare. Thus, the objectives of the present research were: 1) to establish reference values for renin (REN), angio...
Markers of stemness in equine mesenchymal stem cells: a plea for uniformity.
Theriogenology    December 31, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 8 1431-1443 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.11.008
De Schauwer C, Meyer E, Van de Walle GR, Van Soom A.Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) are a very promising subpopulation of adult stem cells for cell-based regenerative therapies in veterinary medicine. Despite major progress in the knowledge on adult stem cells during recent years, a proper identification of MSC remains a challenge. In human medicine, the Mesenchymal and Tissue Stem Cell Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) recently proposed three criteria to define MSC. Firstly, cells must be plastic-adherent when maintained under standard culture conditions. Secondly, MSC must express CD73, CD90 and CD105, and lac...
Quality and fertility of cooled-shipped stallion semen at the time of insemination.
Theriogenology    December 31, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 5 849-856 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.10.027
Heckenbichler S, Deichsel K, Peters P, Aurich C.Stallion semen processing is far from standardized and differs substantially between AI centers. Suboptimal pregnancy rates in equine AI may primarily result from breeding with low quality semen not adequately processed for shipment. It was the aim of the study to evaluate quality and fertility of cooled-shipped equine semen provided for breeding of client mares by commercial semen collection centers in Europe. Cooled shipped semen (n = 201 doses) from 67 stallions and 36 different EU-approved semen collection centers was evaluated. At arrival, semen temperature was 9.8 ± 0.2 °C, mean sperm ...
Morphometric and ultrastructural features of the mare oviduct epithelium during oestrus.
Theriogenology    December 15, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 4 671-678 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.10.007
Desantis S, Zizza S, Accogli G, Acone F, Rossi R, Resta L.Morphometric, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations have displayed regional differences in the mare oviductal epithelium. The entire mucosa of the oviduct was lined with a pseudostratified epithelium, which consisted of two distinct cell types, ciliated and non-ciliated. Ciliated cells were predominant in the three different segments of the oviduct and their percentage increased from fimbriae to ampulla and significantly decreased in the isthmus. SEM revealed in the infundibulum finger-like mucosal folds, some of them interconnected, in th...
Fatty acids and plasmalogens of the phospholipids of the sperm membranes and their relation with the post-thaw quality of stallion spermatozoa.
Theriogenology    December 8, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 5 811-818 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.10.021
Macías García B, González Fernández L, Ortega Ferrusola C, Morillo Rodríguez A, Gallardo Bolaños JM, Rodríguez Martinez H, Tapia JA....Fatty acids and plasmalogens were extracted from the phospholipids of the plasma membrane of stallion spermatozoa, to determine their relation with sperm quality after freezing and thawing. Sperm quality was rated using a quality index that combined the results of the analysis of sperm motility and velocity (CASA analysis), membrane status and mitochondrial membrane potential (flow cytometry) post thaw. Receiving operating system (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the value of specific lipid components of the sperm membrane herein studied as forecast of potential freezeability. From all parame...
Use of a defined diluent increases the sex-sorting efficiency of stallion sperm.
Theriogenology    December 7, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 4 610-619 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.10.001
Gibb Z, Morris LH, Maxwell WM, Grupen CG.The low efficiency of flow cytometric sex-sorting of stallion sperm has been attributed to the use of an opaque skim milk-based diluent during Hoechst 33342 (H33342) staining. Three experiments were conducted to formulate an optically clear stallion semen diluent for use during H33342 staining, and to determine whether a clear diluent improved resolution during sorting. For Experiment 1, sperm were incubated at 34 °C in each of five diluents containing either no protein, skim milk, 0.25% Cohn's Fraction V BSA, 0.5% BSA, or 1% BSA, following an 18 h storage (15 °C) period, or shortly after co...
Effects of age and altrenogest treatment on conceptus development and secretion of LH, progesterone and eCG in early-pregnant mares.
Theriogenology    December 7, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 3 421-428 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.05.009
Willmann C, Schuler G, Hoffmann B, Parvizi N, Aurich C.The treatment of early pregnant mares with a history of repeated early embryonic loss with the progestin altrenogest has become routine; however no controlled studies on the efficiency of altrenogest to prevent embryonic losses are available so far. In the present study, we have investigated effects of altrenogest treatment in mares on conceptus development and the secretion of LH, progesterone, and eCG until day 100 of pregnancy. In addition, differences related to age of mares were assessed. Mares were treated with altrenogest (0.044 mg/kg per os once daily) or sunflower oil (10 ml per os on...
Systemic treatment with high dose of flunixin-meglumine is able to block ovulation in mares by inducing hemorrhage and luteinisation of follicles.
Theriogenology    November 26, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 4 707-714 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.10.011
Cuervo-Arango J, Domingo-Ortiz R.Prostaglandins play an obligatory role during the process of ovulation in mammals. Ovulation can be blocked by intrafollicular administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in several domestic species including the mare as well as by systemic administration of these drugs in women. In the mare, the effect of systemic NSAIDs treatment on ovulation has not been critically studied. The objectives of this study were: a) to determine whether high dose of flunixin-meglumine (FM) administered systemically to mares during the periovulatory period was able to block ovulation; and b) ...
Validation and usefulness of the Sperm Quality Analyzer V equine for equine semen analysis.
Theriogenology    October 20, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 1 189-194 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.08.003
Hoogewijs M, De Vliegher S, De Schauwer C, Govaere J, Smits K, Hoflack G, de Kruif A, Van Soom A.Routine semen analysis includes evaluation of concentration combined with seminal volume, morphology and motility. Subjective analysis of these parameters is known to be inaccurate, imprecise and subject to variability. Automated semen analysis could lead to an increased standardization in and between laboratories but for that to happen automated devices need to be validated. A new device, the sperm quality analyzer V equine (SQA-Ve) version 1.00.43, was evaluated for its repeatability and agreement with light microscopy (LM), for raw and extended equine semen. Results were compared with compu...
Immunohistochemical localization of aromatase during the development and atresia of ovarian follicles in prepubertal horses.
Theriogenology    October 6, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 9 1707-1712 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.04.019
Mlodawska W, Slomczynska M.Ovarian steroidogenesis from the neonatal to pubertal period in horses is poorly understood. This study was designed to immunolocalize cytochrome P450 aromatase in the ovarian follicles of slaughtered fillies ages approximately (I) 6-9 mo (5 mm in diameter. Staining intensity was dependent on the size and morphology of the follicle. In nonatretic follicles 5-10 mm in diameter, the reaction was weak and heterogeneous, while most intense staining was observed in preovulatory follicles. In follicles (diameter <20 mm) in the groups <10MF and 1YF, the reaction was less intense than in adult m...
Immunolocalization of the hyaluronan receptor CD44 in the reproductive tract of the mare.
Theriogenology    October 6, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 2 276-286 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.08.014
Rodriguez Hurtado I, Stewart AJ, Wolfe DF, Caldwell FJ, Harrie M, Whitley EM.Hyaluronan (HA), a glycosaminoglycan, is a major component of the pericellular matrix which envelopes mammalian cells. Binding of hyaluronan to one of its specific receptors, CD44, modulates transduction of intracellular signals which direct a variety of processes, including embryogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, and neoplasia. Since regulation of these processes is critical to equine reproductive success, localization of constitutive CD44 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemical methods in ovarian, oviductal, and uterine tissues from healthy mares. Ovarian stroma contained thecal ...
Clinical use of dopamine antagonist sulpiride to advance first ovulation in transitional mares.
Theriogenology    September 26, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 1 138-143 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.07.019
Panzani D, Zicchino I, Taras A, Marmorini P, Crisci A, Rota A, Camillo F.Artificial photoperiod treatment is currently the best method to hasten the first ovulation of the breeding season in winter anoestrus mares. However, this is not easy to apply in large herds of mares and, to be effective, has to be planned in the northern hemisphere in December at the latest. Pharmacological treatments have been proposed as alternatives: GnRH agonists, progesterone or its synthetic agonist Altrenogest, and dopamino-antagonists, as pherphenazine, domperidone or sulpiride. Dopamino-antagonists protocols, beginning at a given day of the year, gave controversial results in terms ...
Egg yolk plasma can replace egg yolk in stallion freezing extenders.
Theriogenology    September 15, 2010   Volume 75, Issue 1 105-114 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.07.015
Pillet E, Duchamp G, Batellier F, Beaumal V, Anton M, Desherces S, Schmitt E, Magistrini M.Hen egg yolk is normally used as a cryoprotective agent in semen freezing extenders, but its use has sanitary and practical disadvantages. Moreover the protection afforded by egg yolk has not yet been completely elucidated. The objective of this study was to compare the egg yolk plasma fraction to whole egg yolk in stallion freezing extender. Plasma contains mainly Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL), which are widely presumed to be the cryoprotective agent in egg yolk. Plasma can be produced on an industrial scale, sterilised by gamma-irradiation and incorporated in a ready-to-use extender (our ul...
Redox status of equine seminal plasma reflects the pattern and magnitude of DNA damage in sperm cells.
Theriogenology    August 21, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 9 1677-1684 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.07.007
Wnuk M, Lewinska A, Oklejewicz B, Bartosz G, Tischner M, Bugno-Poniewierska M.Antioxidant status of seminal plasma from 23 stallions was evaluated. We found a negative correlation between total antioxidant capacity (ABTS(•+) decolorization assay) and thiol content of seminal plasma, and sperm DNA damage (8-oxoG immunostaining, TUNEL reaction, comet assay). Low seminal redox status was the strongest correlated with 8-oxoG level which may indicate that seminal total antioxidant capacity influences mainly the formation of single strand DNA breaks in sperm cells. Since inter-individual differences in seminal antioxidant status were reported, we postulated that the redox s...
Total RNA isolation from stallion sperm and testis biopsies.
Theriogenology    July 7, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 6 1099-1106e11062 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.04.023
Das PJ, Paria N, Gustafson-Seabury A, Vishnoi M, Chaki SP, Love CC, Varner DD, Chowdhary BP, Raudsepp T.Sperm mRNA transcriptional profiles can be used to evaluate male fertility, yet differences between species in sperm attributes and packaging require adjustments in sperm RNA isolation protocols. The objective was to optimize RNA isolation methodology for fresh, frozen, and extended ejaculates, and epididymal sperm of stallions. Additionally, a protocol for RNA isolation from testis biopsies was established. Separation of sperm from somatic cells was critical for assuring the isolation of sperm-specific RNA. The highest purity was obtained by centrifuging ejaculates and epididymal sperm at 200...
Factors affecting pre-ovulatory follicle diameter in the mare: the effect of mare age, season and presence of other ovulatory follicles (multiple ovulation).
Theriogenology    July 7, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 7 1241-1247 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.05.027
Morel MC, Newcombe JR, Hayward K.The importance of elucidating factors affecting reproductive performance and efficiency is of paramount concern to the equine industry. Oocyte viability is known to be one of the determinants of reproductive success and evidence suggests that it may be linked to follicle size. The aims of this study were, therefore, to ascertain: i) the average diameter and range of pre-ovulatory follicles in Thoroughbred mares; ii) whether this is affected by either mare age, time within the breeding season, or the presence of multiple pre-ovulatory follicles (MO). One thousand, four hundred and ninety two Th...
Biomarkers of in vivo fertility in sperm and seminal plasma of fertile stallions.
Theriogenology    June 30, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 6 956-967 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.04.025
Novak S, Smith TA, Paradis F, Burwash L, Dyck MK, Foxcroft GR, Dixon WT.The global proteome of sperm and seminal plasma of fertile stallions was investigated to determine whether associations with relative in vivo fertility exist. Seven stallions at stud in a commercial breeding station were collected throughout the breeding season and bred to a total of 164 mares to determine conception rates. On three occasions during the breeding season, raw semen was obtained from a regular collection for proteomic analysis using two-dimensional electrophoresis and also assessed for routine semen quality end points. First cycle conception rate was negatively related to ejacula...
Subclinical infection and periodic shedding of equid herpesvirus 3.
Theriogenology    May 23, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 4 576-580 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.03.014
Barrandeguy M, Vissani A, Lezica FP, Salamone J, Heguy A, Becerra L, Olguin Perglione C, Thiry E.The temporary disruption of reproductive activities due to equine coital exanthema (ECE), caused by equid herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3), at thoroughbred breeding facilities and embryo transfer centres, has an appreciable economic impact. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of excretion of EHV-3 in mares without clinical symptoms under field conditions and the re-excretion patterns of the virus in two seropositive (presumably latently infected) mares maintained in isolation for 11 mo. The EHV-3 virus was detected in perineal-vaginal swabs by real time PCR in 14 (6%) of 220 thoro...
Ceftiofur derivates in serum and endometrial tissue after intramuscular administration in healthy mares.
Theriogenology    May 21, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 3 466-472 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.02.030
Witte TS, Bergwerff AA, Scherpenisse P, Drillich M, Heuwieser W.Endometritis is one of the major problems in the horse breeding industry. The use of antibiotics for treatment of endometritis in the mare is recommended as best practice. The intrauterine application of antibiotics, however, has been under discussion over the last years because of concerns about its efficacy. The systemic use of antibiotics has been considered more effective because of its better distribution within the uterus. The objective of the present study was to determine the concentration of ceftiofur derivates in serum and endometrial tissue after intramuscular administration. Specif...
A comparative stereological study of the term placenta in the donkey, pony and Thoroughbred.
Theriogenology    May 21, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 4 627-631 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.03.006
Veronesi MC, Villani M, Wilsher S, Contri A, Carluccio A.The aim of the study was to compare horse and donkey placentae using stereological techniques. Term placentae were collected at spontaneous foaling from seven Thoroughbred mares, seven pony mares, and six jenny donkeys. Maternal and foal weights were recorded and the mass, volume, and gross area of each allantochorion was also recorded. Ten random biopsies were recovered and processed for light microscopy from which the surface density of the microcotyledons (S(v)) and the total microscopic area of fetomaternal contact were calculated stereologically. Gestation length was longer in the donkeys...
Inhibition of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore reduces “apoptosis like” changes during cryopreservation of stallion spermatozoa.
Theriogenology    May 10, 2010   Volume 74, Issue 3 458-465 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2010.02.029
Ortega Ferrusola C, González Fernández L, Salazar Sandoval C, Macías García B, Rodríguez Martínez H, Tapia JA, Peña FJ.In order to evaluate to what extent the changes that occur during cryopreservation involve the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PT-pore), a specific inhibitor was used during the cryopreservation process of stallion spermatozoa. Four ejaculates from each of 7 stallions were frozen using a standard protocol. Before freezing, each ejaculate was split into three subsamples. The first was supplemented with 2.5 microM bongkrekic acid (BA) and the second with 5 microM BA. The third subsample served as control. The BA significantly reduced the percentage of spermatozoa depicting active cas...
