Development and validation of an equine nerve block simulator to supplement practical skills training in undergraduate veterinary students. Lameness is the most common presenting complaint in equine practice. Performing diagnostic nerve blocks is an integral part of any lameness work-up, and is therefore an essential skill for equine practitioners. In equine grass sickness, serum amyloid A and fibrinogen are elevated, and can aid differential diagnosis from non-inflammatory causes of colic. Equine grass sickness (EGS) is a debilitating and often fatal neurodegenerative disease. A presumptive diagnosis of EGS may be made on the basis of clinical signs and subjective ancillary tests, but a definitive antemortem diagnosis can only be made following histopathological examination of intestinal biopsies. Veterinary career ambitions correlate with gender and past experience, with current experience influencing curricular perspectives. The Royal Veterinary College's 'Teaching Quality Survey' was completed by 261 recent graduates (six months after graduation) from 2005 to 2011 (26.8 per cent response rate). The results were used to compare veterinarians' background information with current position and career ambition, and to investigate perceptions of curriculum balance. Comparison of two antimicrobial regimens on the prevalence of incisional infections after colic surgery. Appropriate durations of perioperative antimicrobial therapy following exploratory coeliotomy in horses are controversial, and with the rising prevalence of multiresistant bacteria there is a strong incentive to use antimicrobials for the shortest time possible. Forces applied with a hoof tester to cadaver feet vary widely between users. Hoof testers are commonly used in equine practice. In this study, we determined the intraoperator and interoperator reliability of force application with hoof testers for different groups: experienced veterinarians, novices and farriers. For this purpose, we have developed and validated an instrumented hoof tester. Since first being detected in Nigeria in January 2007, African horse sickness virus serotype 2 (AHSV-2) has spread throughout the northern hemisphere, and was first reported in Senegal.
