Problems associated with the interpretation of the results of regional and intra-articular anaesthesia in the horse. The difficulties associated with the interpretation of the results of regional and intra-articular anaesthesia are discussed with reference to eight lame horses. The clinical and radiographic features of each horse are described, together with the results of anaesthesia. One horse had clinical and radiographic signs consistent with navicular disease but it was not possible to relieve the lameness. Behaviour of the false rig: causes and treatments. The false rig is a castrated horse which shows masculine behaviour of one sort or another. The behaviour patterns reported to the author by owners of such animals and the possible causes are discussed here. Some such horses can show all the behaviour patterns of the entire, including erection and intromission. Evidence is presented that the behaviour is not hormonally induced or hormone dependent. The thesis is put forward that the behaviour shown is part of the normal social interaction between horses and possible treatments are discussed in the light of this possibility.
Guidelines for the recognition and assessment of pain in animals. Prepared by a working party of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers. Despite some views to the contrary the working party of the Association of Veterinary Teachers and Research Workers considers that it has been demonstrated that it is possible to prepare guidelines for the recognition and assessment of pain in experimental animals. The detailed information readily available on species specific signs is limited and it has been particularly difficult to obtain such signs for the smaller mammals and for the non-mammalian species.
Congenital malformation of the large colon causing colic in a horse. An abnormal mesocolic attachment which resulted in a stellate malformation of the left colon adjacent to the pelvic flexure was suspected to be the cause of intermittent episodes of colic in a horse. Resection and side-to-side anastomosis of the large colon at the level of the sternal and diaphragmatic flexures was performed and the horse made an uneventful recovery from surgery. Only minor serum biochemical changes were observed in the initial postoperative period. The abnormal mesocolic attachment was probably a congenital anomaly.
The sympatho-adrenal system and plasma levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol and catecholamines in equine grass sickness. Plasma levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol and catecholamines were used to study the role of the sympatho-adrenal system in equine grass sickness. Statistical evaluation determined differences of hormone levels between seven horses with grass sickness (one acute, five subacute and one chronic), six horses with colic (one with laminitis) and 16 control horses before and after mild stress. Exercise and the height of horses. The heights of 89 horses were measured at the withers before and after half a furlong of trotting exercise. The mean (+/- sd) height increase after exercise was 1.75 +/- 0.86 cm and the horses returned to their resting height within seven minutes. There was no linear relationship between gain in height and pre-exercise height.
Effects of xylazine on renal function and plasma glucose in ponies. The intravenous administration of xylazine (1.1 mg/kg bodyweight) in six ponies resulted in a significant increase in urine output over two hours, with maximum flow occurring between 30 and 60 minutes after injection. Urine specific gravity, osmolality and glucose concentration decreased. Renal clearance of endogenous creatinine was unchanged.
