Jakubów K, Gromadzka-Ostrowska J.Plasma lysozyme activity changed during the 2 years of the investigation period. In some species (e.g. ponies and goats) there are only seasonal fluctuations with the highest levels during summer and autumn in ponies and during winter in goats. In two Camelidae species, guanacos and llamas, only, downward trends were found, whereas in donkeys, both types of changes: seasonal variations with the maximal level during autumn and an upward long-term trend were found.
Observations on tracheal mucociliary clearance in horses.
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 5-9
Coombs SL, Webbon PM.The rate of movement up the mucociliary escalator of Technetium99m tagged to macroaggregated albumin was measured in 7 normal horses and 8 with respiratory disease. The activity at 2 sites in the neck, separated by 12-15 cm, was measured using a hand held scintillation counter and rate meter. In normal horses the Technetium complex moved as a bolus up the neck with a mean rate of 1.58 cm/min. In the horses with respiratory disease the Technetium complex was less likely to move as a discrete bolus and in three horses it was not possible to measure the transport rate. The remainder had a mean tr...

Frequencies of plasma protease inhibitor alleles in Australian horse breeds and the recognition of two new alleles.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1987   Volume 18, Issue 2 181-186 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1987.tb00757.x
Patterson SD, Bell K.Investigation of the plasma protease inhibitor system (Pi) in the Arabian and quarter horse breeds and re-examination of the standardbred breed resulted in the recognition of two new Pi alleles, designated E and L2. PiE is rare and has been found in only three quarter horses. In contrast, PiL2 is relatively common in the standardbred (0.107) and allowed subdivision of PiL into PiL and PiL2. Splitting of PiL resulted in an exclusion probability (PE) of 0.649 for the standardbred Pi system. Frequencies of the Pi genes have now been determined for four breeds (thoroughbred, standardbred, quarter ...
Pemphigoid in domestic animals.
Clinics in dermatology    January 1, 1987   Volume 5, Issue 1 155-162 doi: 10.1016/0738-081x(87)90060-5
Scott DW.Pemphigoid (from the Greek “resembling pemphigus”) has been recognized in humans for many years. The occurence of pemphigoid in domestic animals is a much more recent observation. In the dog, bullous pemphigoid was first documented in 1978.1 Equine bullous pemphigoid was originally reported in 1981.2 The purpose of this article is to review pemphigoid in domestic animals, compare the disease with its human counterpart, and alert the physician to an exciting area for comparative dermatologic research.

Veterinary pathology    January 1, 1987   Volume 24, Issue 1 44-49 doi: 10.1177/030098588702400108
Schuh JC, Valentine BA.Basal cell tumors from 11 horses were examined histologically. Distinct patterns identified in the order of frequency are adenoid (six), solid (three), and medusoid (two). A minor component of most of these neoplasms was a ribbon pattern and cystic spaces. Hyalinized connective tissue and clear cells reminiscent of hair follicle glassy membranes and outer root sheath were present in a solid and the medusoid tumors. Heavy melanin pigmentation was present in one solid basal cell tumor. In eight cases for which information was available, the tumors had not recurred 3 to 8 years after excision.
Trabecular bone remodeling around smooth and porous implants in an equine patellar model.
Journal of biomechanics    January 1, 1987   Volume 20, Issue 11-12 1121-1134 doi: 10.1016/0021-9290(87)90029-7
Cheal EJ, Snyder BD, Nunamaker DM, Hayes WC.The objective of this investigation was to examine the stress-morphology relationships for trabecular bone around implants with different surface characteristics. Stainless steel spheres with either a polished surface or a sintered-bead porous coating were implanted unilaterally into equine patellae and maintained for a 6 month period. Stereological methods were used to quantify the trabecular bone morphology and finite element analyses were performed to predict the trabecular bone stresses. In general, the remodeling response around the smooth implants was greater than that around those porou...

Comparative biochemistry and physiology. A, Comparative physiology    January 1, 1987   Volume 87, Issue 3 561-564 doi: 10.1016/0300-9629(87)90360-4
Bell JU, Lopez JM, Bartos KD.1. Serum samples were collected from ten foals at predetermined times during the first 12 months following birth and zinc and copper concentrations and ceruloplasmin activity were evaluated. 2. Serum zinc concentrations were found to be quite variable with respect to age (range = 67-95 micrograms/dl). 3. Serum copper concentrations increased in a linear fashion from day 0 to day 28 before levelling off at 190-247 micrograms/dl. 4. Ceruloplasmin activity was found to correlate with the concentration of serum copper (r = 0.92) and reached a plateau at an activity of 30-38 IU by day 28.
[Diagnosis of liver diseases in dogs, cats and horses].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 4 343-347
Kraft W.Clinical symptoms of hepatopathies are not specific and must be verified by further investigation. Laboratory diagnosis is a very useful method to decide if liver disease is present or not. In individual cases laboratory methods can give hints as to the aetiology of the illness. If necessary, biopsy, angiography or/and cholecystography can be carried out for further clarification of the diagnosis.
Analysis of the physiological processes connected with sexual maturation of stallions.
Polskie archiwum weterynaryjne    January 1, 1987   Volume 27, Issue 1 5-21
Kosiniak K, Bittmar A.Physiological processes connected with sexual maturation of stallions were observed on 10 half-breed Anglo-Arab stallions beginning from 8 months of age, until 4.5 years of age. It was found that there is full somatic and sexual development in the stallion reached around the age of 3.5 years, and the sperm morphology stabilized in the range of the physiological norm around 3.0 years of age. On the other hand biochemical components of the semen plasma such as glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC), ergothioneine (EGT), total protein (PRT), up to age 4.5 years, reach significantly lower value than in m...

Quantification of equine ground reaction force patterns.
Journal of biomechanics    January 1, 1987   Volume 20, Issue 4 443-446 doi: 10.1016/0021-9290(87)90051-0
Schamhardt HC, Merkens HW.A method was developed to quantify the ground reaction force pattern of the horse. A number of selected force amplitudes and peak-time positions in the normalized stance phase of left and right contralateral limbs were used to calculate symmetry indices. Data from each limb were compared with those of a 'standard horse' resulting in limb indices. The combination of amplitude and peak-time symmetry and limb indices yielded one H(orse)INDEX. These indices were useful for comparison of different horses and for the evaluation of lameness and treatment.

Investigation into the heredity of congenital lateral patellar (sub)luxation in the Shetland pony.
The veterinary quarterly    January 1, 1987   Volume 9, Issue 1 1-8 doi: 10.1080/01652176.1987.9694070
Hermans WA, Kersjes AW, van der Mey GJ, Dik KJ.A breeding experiment was carried out in a group of Shetland ponies in order to investigate the heredity of congenital lateral patellar (sub)luxation. A breeding herd was established and consisted of stallions and mares acquired at different times. Some were free from, and others were affected by lateral patellar (sub)luxation in either one or both femoropatellar joints. Over a period of 20 years, 49 foals were born from different mating combinations. Some offspring were free from the defect and others showed the abnormality. Though the number of foals bred during the experiment is rather smal...
Apneic oxygenation in anesthetized ponies and horses.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1987   Volume 11, Issue 3 281-291 doi: 10.1007/BF00570926
Blaze CA, Robinson NE.Apneic oxygenation was studied in six ponies for 30 minutes, and six horses for 10 minutes. Arterial blood was sampled at regular intervals for measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2) and calculation of alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (PAO2-PaO2). In both groups of animals, PaO2 decreased rapidly during the first 3 minutes of apnea, then more slowly. Although the mean value was above 100 mmHg at 10 minutes, there was considerable inter-animal variability. Before apnea, PAO2-PaO2 was slightly, but not significantly, larger in horses than in ponies and incr...
Ventilatory and blood gas dynamics at onset and offset of exercise in the pony.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    January 1, 1987   Volume 62, Issue 1 141-148 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1987.62.1.141
Powers SK, Beadle RE, Thompson D, Lawler J.The purpose of these experiments was to examine the temporal pattern of arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) to assess the relationship between alveolar ventilation (VA) and CO2 return to the lung at the onset and offset of submaximal treadmill exercise. Five healthy ponies exercised for 8 min at two work rates: 50 m/min 6% grade and 70 m/min 12% grade. PaCO2 decreased (P less than 0.05) below resting values within 1 min after commencement of exercise at both work rates and reached a nadir at 90 s. PaCO2 decreased maximally by 2.5 and 3.5 Torr at the low and moderate rate, respectively. Aft...
