Lameness in a mare with signs of arteriovenous fistula. A 5-year-old mare was evaluated for lameness and swelling of the right forelimb. Clinical findings, including peripheral edema, venous pulsation, palpable thrill in the cephalic vein, disparate arteriovenous oxygen tension differences between the left and right forelimbs, and Branham sign, were suggestive of arteriovenous fistula. Failure to identify the fistula by angiography was attributed to closure of the shunt during anesthesia. Surgical exploration of the affected limb to identify the shunt also was unsuccessful.
Peripheral vascularization of the dermal laminae of the equine hoof. The vascular architecture of the dermal laminae was studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. Ultrastructurally, the laminar vasculature consisted of arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins, arranged in a sheet-like network. Through the laminae, arterioles ran parallel to the solar surface and branched at two levels to form a continuous arteriolar arcade, parallel to the hoof wall. The navicular bone, navicular bursa and their associated structures were collected from 20 horses ranging in age from 80 days gestation to 2 years post-gestation. The right front foot of every horse was sampled for light microscopy. The development of the navicular bursa and associated structures were studied. Effects of distention and neostigmine on jejunal vascular resistance, oxygen uptake, and intraluminal pressure changes in ponies. The influence of distention (high baseline intraluminal pressure) and neostigmine methylsulfate on intestinal vascular resistance, oxygen uptake, and intraluminal pressure changes (rhythmic contractions) was studied in terminal jejunal segments, which were perfused at a constant rate, in 16 anesthetized ponies. Pulsed-wave Doppler evaluation of intracardiac blood flow in 30 clinically normal Standardbred horses. Pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography was performed on 30 clinically normal 1- to 6-year-old racing Standardbreds. There were 13 females, 13 geldings, and 4 stallions. Epidermal growth factor-mediated effects on equine vascular smooth muscle cells. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor binding kinetics and EGF-mediated stimulation of DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation were studied in cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) from the equine thoracic aorta. Effects of flunixin meglumine on jejunal blood flow, motility, and oxygen consumption in ponies. Using isolated autoperfused intestinal segments, the effects of flunixin meglumine administration on systemic arterial blood pressure, jejunal blood flow, vascular resistance, motility, arteriovenous oxygen difference, and oxygen consumption were determined in 10 anesthetized ponies ventilated with a mixture of halothane and oxygen. Sudden death attributable to exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in racehorses: nine cases (1981-1983). Pathologic changes are described in 11 horses that died during racing or training; 9 died of acute pulmonary hemorrhage (exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage), 1 died of exsanguination, and 1 died of CNS trauma. Cardiac lesions were not found in any horse. Severe engorgement of pulmonary vessels, with hemorrhage into alveoli, airways, interstitium, and subpleural tissues, was observed in all 9 horses that died of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage. Evaluation of Starling forces in the equine digit. Distribution and ultrastructure of mast cells in the equine respiratory tract. Mast cells in the equine respiratory mucosa were studied at both light--and transmission electron--microscope levels. Mast cells were identified at all levels of the tract, with the greatest cell density in the nasopharynx. Microcirculation of the coronary band of the equine hoof. Scanning-electron-microscopic examination of corrosion casts was used to investigate the microcirculation of the coronary border of the equine hoof. Numerous peg-shaped capillary plexuses derived from arterioles extended distally from the dorsal branches of the digital arteries parallel to the hoof wall. The plexuses varied in length and consisted of a fine network of interconnected capillaries that converged to join a centrally situated venule. These centrally situated venules within the papillary plexuses gave rise to a vast venous plexus deep to the coronary band.
Variability of fiber size, capillary density and capillary length related to horse muscle fixation procedures. Muscle samples were taken from the superficial part of the semitendinosus muscle of four standardbred horses to compare the effects of three different fixation procedures on fiber size and capillarity. Infiltration fixation in an extended position of the muscle was compared to immersion fixation and infiltration fixation in a flexed position of the limb. Astrocytes in the guinea pig, horse, and monkey retina: their occurrence coincides with the presence of blood vessels. In the present study the distribution of astrocytes in the nerve fiber layer (NFL) has been studied in the sparsely vascularized retinae of the guinea pig and horse and in the richly vascularized retina of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) using immunocytochemical methods. Vascular malformations and angiomatous lesions in horses: a review of 10 cases. Vascular malformations and angiomas are rather uncommon in horses and the literature concerning these lesions is reviewed. The pathology is described in 10 additional cases. These lesions were classified as arteriovenous malformation (one case), haemangiomas (six cases), 'proliferative angiomas' (two cases) and lymphangioma (one case). The haemangiomas and lymphangioma were probably hamartomatous in origin. Both cases of 'proliferative angioma' developed in aged animals and their pathogenesis was uncertain. Measurements of muscular microcirculation by laser Doppler flowmetry in isoflurane and halothane anaesthetised horses. The cardiovascular function of horses was less depressed during anaesthesia with isoflurane than during anaesthesia with halothane. Cutaneous vasculitis in horses: 19 cases (1978-1985). The medical records of 19 horses with cutaneous vasculitis were reviewed. Most (73.7%) affected horses were between 3 and 10 years old, and there were significantly more mares (14) than stallions or geldings (5) (P less than 0.01). Subcutaneous edema of the limbs, body, and/or head was the predominant clinical sign (18/19 horses; 94.7%). Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy. The neurologic form of EHV-1 infection appears to be the result of central nervous system infarction caused by vasculitis, which is initiated in endothelial cells of small blood vessels. Retinal astrocytes: their restriction to vascularized parts of the mammalian retina. The distribution of astrocytes has been studied in whole-mounted horse and monkey retinae by the immunocytochemical localization of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). In the horse, astrocytes were found to be restricted to a narrow zone close to the optic nerve head. This is also the only region of the horse retina that is vascularized. In the monkey, astrocytes were found ubiquitously in the nerve fiber layer of the retina, apart from the avascular fovea centralis which lacked astrocytes.
