Evaluation of factors associated with postoperative ileus in horses: 31 cases (1990-1992). Medical records of horses that underwent surgical treatment for colic between 1990 and 1992 were reviewed. Horses with a pulse rate of > or = 60 beats/min or signs of abdominal pain, which were also accompanied by a volume of > 2 L of material that refluxed from the stomach during the postoperative period (excluding horses with anterior enteritis), comprised the postoperative ileus (POI) group. Case report: acute joint destabilization in the equine demonstrating early pathology in osteoarthritis. A case of acute destabilization of the right stifle joint associated with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and avulsion fracture of the tibial spine in a horse is reported. The diagnosis was obtained by scintigraphy and radiography. Post mortem investigations 6 weeks after injury demonstrated fibrillation of surface cartilage in regions unprotected by tibial menisci. No pathological change was demonstrated in the subchondral bone of the tibia in regions associated with loss of cartilage integrity.
Treatment of aplastic anemia with an investigational antilymphocyte serum prepared in rabbits. The authors evaluated antilymphocyte serum prepared in rabbits (ALS-R) as an alternative to antilymphocyte serum prepared in horses (ALG-H) in the therapy of aplastic anemia. Between 1980 and 1993, 57 evaluable patients received ALS-R and prednisone +/- cyclosporine +/- androgens. Standard response criteria were used and patients were evaluated at 3 months from the start of therapy. Median age was 43 years. Epiglottitis in horses: 20 cases (1988-1993). Epiglottitis was diagnosed and treated in 20 horses (13 Thoroughbreds and 7 Standardbreds) over a 5-year period. Eighteen horses were used for racing, and 2 Standardbreds were broodmares. Primary clinical signs were exercise intolerance, respiratory noise, and coughing. Experimental treatment of equine sarcoid using a xanthate compound and recombinant human tumour necrosis factor alpha. Ventricular tachycardia and myocardial dysfunction in a horse. Ventricular tachycardia develops less frequently than supraventricular dysrhythmias and generally is more indicative of cardiac disease. The horse in this report had clinical signs of lethargy and hypophagia and was determined to have sustained ventricular tachycardia. Multifocal myositis associated with Sarcocystis sp in a horse. Multifocal myositis was diagnosed in a 7-year-old Quarter Horse gelding on the basis of history and findings on physical examination, serum biochemical analysis, electromyography, and microscopic examination of frozen sections of muscle biopsy specimens. [Renal tubular acidosis (type 2) in a Friesian mare]. A 2-year-old Friesian mare was examined because she had been sluggish for a few weeks. Blood biochemistry showed that concentrations of creatinine (136 mumol.L-1) and urea nitrogen (6.1 mmol.L-1) in plasma were within their normal limits. Sonographic findings in horses with mediastinal lymphosarcoma: 13 cases (1985-1992). Sonographic findings correlated with necropsy findings in 8 of 9 horses in which the cranial portion of the mediastinum was evaluated by use of both methods. Cranial mediastinal masses were imaged as multilobular and homogeneously hypoechoic; a complex echogenic pattern was observed with necrosis within the mass. Surgical repair of iatrogenic soft palate defects in two horses. A 4-year-old Thoroughbred filly was referred for evaluation of a soft palate defect that had been created several weeks earlier during surgical correction of epiglottic entrapment, performed transorally. Surgical correction of the defect was performed via mandibular symphysiotomy. At 85 days after repair, the horse raced successfully. A 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly was admitted for evaluation and treatment of epiglottic entrapment. The soft palate was lacerated during transnasal division of the entrapping membrane. A 2-cm full-thickness soft palate laceration was repaired transorally.
Eosinophilic keratoconjunctivitis in a horse. An 11-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was evaluated because of a persistent, raised band of 1- to 2-mm subepithelial plaques of the left cornea. Cytologic examination of corneal scrapings revealed numerous eosinophils and segmented neutrophils, with few mast cells, plasma cells, and lymphocytes. Bacteriologic culture yielded sparse growth of alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus and Staphylococcus spp. Histologically, the plaques consisted of subepithelial foci of fragmented and degenerated collagen fibers infiltrated by eosinophils and neutrophils, with few lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages. ...
Removal of inspissated purulent exudate from the ventral conchal sinus of three standing horses. Primary paranasal sinusitis, complicated by inspissated purulent exudate in a ventral conchal sinus, was diagnosed in 3 horses. Three-dimensional sonographic imaging of the equine superficial digital flexor tendon. In a feasability study, a technique for constructing 3-dimensional sonographic images of the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) was established in 6 clinically normal horses and applied to 7 horses with injured SDFT. Successful pregnancy after partial hysterectomy in two mares. Infertility was associated with a uterine mass in 2 Thoroughbred mares. Both mares had produced live foals, but had been barren for 2 years, despite repeated breedings. Each mass was removed through a right ventral paramedian incision. Histologic examination of the masses revealed a leiomyoma and an ovarian abscess. In 1 mare, approximately 30% of 1 uterine horn was removed because of tumor attachment; in the other mare, approximately 50% of 1 uterine horn was removed because of adhesions to the ovarian abscess. Topical use of 5-fluorouracil for treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the external genitalia of horses: 11 cases (1988-1992). Ten horses with histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 1 horse with presumptive SCC of the external genitalia were treated with a combination of surgical debridement and topical administration of 5-fluorouracil, or with topical treatment alone. Tumor remission was obtained in all horses except 1 in which owner compliance was deficient, and no recurrences have been reported. Topical use of 5-fluorouracil as a chemotherapeutic agent for treatment of genital lesions of SCC in horses should be considered as a viable alternative to radical surgical excision.

Osteochondral fragmentation of the plantar/palmar proximal aspect of the proximal phalanx in racing horses. The clinical presentation and outcome of treatment is presented for 26 cases of osteochondral fragmentation of the plantar/palmar proximal aspect of the proximal phalanx. Twenty-three were racing Standardbreds and three were racing Thoroughbreds. The most common reason for presentation was an inability to run straight at high speed. [Two congenital anomalies of the urinary tract in warmblood horses: ectopia ureteris and diverticulum vesicae]. Two cases of congenital anomalies of the urinary tract of horses are described.
