Osteochondrosis in the horse. I. A clinical and radiologic investigation of osteochondritis dissecans of the knee and hock joint. The clinical and radiologic features of osteochondritis dissecans in the knee and hock joint of horses are described. The material includes 91 horses, of which 43 had the lesion in one or both knee joints, and 48 in one or both hock joints. It was found that osteochondritis dissecans of the knee joint was more common than the one in the hock joint in thoroughbreds and halfbreds, while the lesion in the hock joint was most common in standardbred trotters. Recovery from anaesthesia in ponies: a comparative study of the effects of isoflurane, enflurane, methoxyflurane and halothane. The duration and quality of recovery after separate 2 hour anaesthetic periods with equipotent alveolar concentrations of isoflurane, enflurane, halothane and methoxyflurane were evaluated in experimental ponies. Recovery was shortest after isoflurane anaesthesia, followed by enflurane, halothane and finally methoxyflurane, although standing was achieved more rapidly after enflurane than after isoflurane. Bending properties of cortical bone of the horse. Bending properties of samples of cortical bone taken from the cranial, caudal, medial, and lateral quadrants of the midshaft of the radius, femur, and metacarpus of 12 ponies, 18 months old, were determined by 4-point loading at a rate of 10 mm/minute. The elastic modulus for all samples was between 16.2 and 20.2 GN/m2, and the ultimate breaking strength, between 204 and 255 MN/m2. The influence of neuroleptanalgesia on the serum activity of muscle enzymes in ponies. The serum activities of creatine kinase (CPK), aldolase (ALD) and alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (HBD) were determined in a group of Welsh Mountain ponies before and after a 30 minute period of neuroleptanalgesia induced by i.v. injection of Immobilon and terminated by i.v. injection of Revivon. Demonstration of specific antibodies in the central nervous system of horses naturally infected with Borna disease virus. From 18 horses with clinical symptoms of an affection of the central nervous system and with histopathologic alterations in the brain, four were demonstrated to have Bornavirus-specific antibodies. The antibodies are monospecific, recognizing identical antigens from infected brains of different animal species as well as from persistently infected tissue culture cells. Black grain mycetoma (maduromycosis) in horses. Black grain mycetoma occurred in two horses, one a cross-bred pony and the other a Thoroughbred racehorse. Lesions were limited to wart-like growths in one case and a deep-seated girth gall in the other. In both cases the granules in the affected tissues were similar in pigmentation and structure to those produced by Curvularia geniculata in dogs. Since all the specimens were received in formalin, the causative fungus could not be isolated. These are the first cases of maduromycosis in animals to be recorded in South Africa.
Some unusual cases of abnormal respiratory noises in the horse. Any condition which leads to a diminution in the size or alteration of the shape of the lumen of the respiratory tract in the horse may result in the production of abnormal respiratory noises at exercise.
Vestibular disease, and its relationship to facial paralysis in the horse: a clinical study of 7 cases. The signs observed in 6 cases of peripheral vestibular disease included incoordination, head tilt and nystagmus. The intensity of the signs varied greatly with duration of the disease, and in 3 cases facial paralysis was also present. Tympanosclerosis was demonstrable in all cases subject to radiology. Trauma was the causative factor in most cases. The causes of, and relationships between, vestibular dysfunction and concomitant facial paralysis are discussed. The exact etiology of the tympanosclerosis is unknown.
Rate of change of halothane concentration in a large animal circle anesthetic system. The slow rate of change of inspired halothane concentration which results in a conventional large animal circle anesthetic delivery system when low carrier gas flow rates are used was confirmed, using a model system. To obtain a 63% change in inspired halothane concentration in the 32-L large animal circle anesthetic machine at fresh gas inflow rates of 3, 6, and 12 L/minute required 10.7, 5.3, and 2.7 minutes, respectively. [Veterinary and clinical experience of the use of a beta2-receptor-stimulating sympathicomimetic agent (NAB 365) in horses with respiratory discase (author’s transl)]. The manufacturers state that NAB 365 is a beta2-receptor-stimulating sympathicomimetic agent. According to the medical literature it combines a bronchial antispasmodic effect with certain bronchia secretolytic properties and has few untoward side-effects on, for instance, the heart and intestine. The effectiveness of administration of NAB 365 in horses with chronic or acute respiratory disease was tested in the Department of Veterinary Internal medicine in Utrecht.
